Re: Shack on a Bike
I'll try to get a larger photo...for some reason that photo of my bike is a lot smaller in physical size...but it's not that much smaller of a file than the other one!

From the operator's perspective: http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v442/214/104/1412403363/n1412403363_130904_2411.jpg The housing is just a Yaesu VX-7R in a food container, with foam cushioning underneith. Shack on a Bike
I tested out my Ham-on-a-Bike rig on a long ride to Sierra Peak. The setup has been holding up very well, even on rough descents. No real problems with my road testing two weeks ago, but that's pretty smooth going. I figured it needed a bit more vibration testing! http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/photos ...

Re: HF Net
I think what I may do is build an inexpensive HF receiver kit, and just listen for a while.
If the traffic sounds good, I'll break open the piggy for a Xceiver.
Thanks!

HF Net
I would like to explore the HF bands, but want to be sure I have a use for the (expensive) radio before I take the plunge. After a half hour at HRO listening these bands, I was able to find only one scratchy contact! Any HF nets planned, or do you know of any that currently exist? Or should I save ...

Re: Wilderness Protocol
Great post! I have one of those simplex frequencies programmed into my HT already, and for good measure, I put it in black tape on my orange emergency blanket! I was unaware there were more standard back-country simplex frequencies, and I'll program them into my HT tonight (now that I can program my ...

Re: Map & Compass
This one is easier to remember, and I teach it to all the Scouts in my troop. STICK_COMPASS.jpg You won't be finding a geocache with these techniques, but you can orient your map well enough to get you to a "handrail" In navigation parlance, a handrail is a long feature, such as a freeway or river ...

OK, OK! Sorry for the wait, but this forum doesn't like to upload .gif's. OK, here's how to tell time with an analog watch! During daylight savings time, bisect the angle between the hour hand and 1:00. Or think of it this way...The sun rises at 6:00PM and sets at 6:00 PM. You watch's hour hand is ...
