OAUSA Net - August 22, 2013 - Wilderness Medicine

Post by DaveK » Tue Aug 20, 2013 2:23 pm

This will be part two, and hopefully the conclusion, of the Outdoor Medicine Net that we started last March. Our guest again will be Dr. Aaron Rubin M.D. Dr. Rubin's expertise will provide a good guide on how to deal with some of the most common outdoor medical issues.

Once you hit the dirt and especially once you get out of cell phone range, medical preparedness becomes a must. Join us for the discussion.

1. One of our topics under discussion during the net will be the use and storage of antibiotics and antivirals. Here are two articles that are of some interest, both written by Cynthia J. Koelker, MD:

Which Antibiotics to have on hand: http://www.survivalblog.com/2011/02/sev ... kpile.html

Risks of using expired medications: http://www.survivalblog.com/2010/10/gue ... ed_me.html

2. Keeping your medical supplies safe and secure, as well as organized, can be difficult. Pelican Cases has one solution, the 1550 EMS organizer, measuring 18" x 14" x 7". THe case is extremely rugged, durable, air and moisture tight, and guaranteed for a lifetime. See: http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1550EMS

3. For those serious aboaut becoming knowledgable in wilderness first aid, there are many classes and programs available. One of the best is the Wilderness First Responder program, see: http://www.nols.edu/wmi/courses/wfr.shtml

This weeks product spotlight is on two products:

1. Yaesu's newest VHF/UHF radio, the digital capable FTM400D (also does analog). Cost is about $650.00 - $700.00

One of the many new features of this radio is the inclusion of a camera in the microphone. This naturally prompted some comedy. One observer noted:
Finally!!!! A radio with a mike that can take a picture of my lips when transmitting
Comedy aside, here are some of the features of this radio:

3.5" TFT Color Display
Altitude Display
500 Memories Per Band
Band Scope
Dual Reception

Three RF Levels 5/20/50W
12.5 kHz C4FM/FDMA

Another source for Wilderness First Responder is http://www.wildmed.com/

In Southern California I can recommend Josh Jackson's WFR class. He is located in San Diego
He has his own web site http://www.wildlead.com
He is certified thru Wilderness Medical Associates and he has scheduled classes at many different location in SoCal.
His schedule is posted on both web sites.

In fact, I am signed up for a re cert class in September in San Diego with Josh.
See you on the Trail!
