Wow that is cheap! This is a great unit for an HID kit. I've converted four 500s over to HID and they are very bright.

Re: Hella 500's really cheap
Just for informational purposes, the Hella 500 series that are sold through Amazon, Walmart, etc., are no longer the German-made Hella lights. Hella has sub-contracted them out to a Taiwanese company. The overall quality is not what it used to be - Hella has now made the 500 series the entry level light for mass-marketing vendors. And despite the "brightness" you can get from a home-made conversion using taiwan made HID bulb kits, the lighting itself is not as efficiently directed as a true HID lens system - HID bulbs require a longer bulb-to-reflector distance for proper focus than an H-3 halogen bulb.big dave wrote:Just thought you guys might want a smokin deal on Hella lights.
Still, at $30 a set, that's a great deal for a decent on-road fog or driving light (depending on which lens you choose).
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear really bright, until they start talking

Larry, you are correct again sir. The Hellas that I used for my conversion (bought them at Walmart)are not the same German made ones. I had to modify the back of the light housing to allow the H4 bulb to be used.

The HID conversion kits are also available in H3 bulb style, which is the same as the Hella 500 halogen bulb. An H4 housing is a different style base altogether, and would probably require more modification than using an H3 conversion kit. You will still have to cut out the back of the light, but the internal mount should be easier...

On second glance I think I did use H3 6000k bulbs. Here is a chart

Just an update, I bought 4 of the lights (2 kits) got them in today and they were made in Germany. They were 36.99 per pair 80.93 total including shipping. They look good.

Re: Hella 500's really cheap
That might explain the pricing, as Hella is no longer making the 500 series in Germany. That is a great price (I've been a Hella distributor for 25 years), and I think the German-made 500 series is superior to the newer model...McRover wrote:Just an update, I bought 4 of the lights (2 kits) got them in today and they were made in Germany.
