All the great new solid front axle Landcruisers are not available in the US. My LC is the last year they were available here with solid front axles. I've surrendered to the idea that I'll just keep what I have and do a diesel swap when the gas engine dies.

On the Defender, I heard of a company in Canada that brings over new diesel Defenders and then does some sort of frame and parts swap to make the vehical legally defined as an older vehicle which is legal for import in the US.

I believe most of the import loopholes have been closed since the heyday of gray market imports of the 80's.

There may be some allowance for alternative energy vehicles like alcohol, propane, electric or other fuel. I could be wrong about this.

California has an allowance for custom built cars, but it may be hard to qualify this as as one:

Yeah, there was an article on a "custom built" Defender 110 in the last issue of Overland Journal. They basically salvaged a totaled '97 NAS Defender 90, a 110 frame from scrap, a bunch of bodies headed to the schmelter, and rebuilt it from scratch (beautifully, I might add).

/me puts this project on the list of things to do when he owns a garage.

They have some soft of "official" license plate. I wonder if they could be registered.

24 bids on one of them so far.

Here's another one. As with anything 25 years old or less, you may have to get creative getting it registered.
