I also dealt with Mark a little, and more so with many of the folks who were involved with him in the two successful and the last failed Calico Cleanup. It ended up being a large event, with a lot of personalities and entities involved that and that made for some drama (for lack of a better term).

So, my advice would be, if you want to plan a clean up, find a place that very much needs it, then contact the BLM or Forest Service, whomever it is that has jurisdiction and see what can be done on a small scale where insurance, paperwork, publicity and vendors are not an issue.

Do that one time, maybe having planning meetings with minutes and all so as to document how it was done and all, then try a second time and expand is some, inviting more people and all that, expanding on what you’d done.

There are plenty of areas that need picked up or fixed up and with the budgets as they are, I am sure most entities would welcome some help. Some have groups in them that might help, Friends of Last Chance Canyon in the EL Pasos for example.

Thanks for the info. I will make a few calls as time permits. Though I doubt I would have time for meetings etc, I will make a few calls to give a heads up. My thought is to just set a date certain to go out and do a shoot and general clean up. We can sure bag trash, but how do we remove TV's and washing machines? Anyone have a large truck?

Organization and such are never a bad thing, and I can tell you from what I know of other ’clean ups’ that getting buy in and such methods builds a team and ensures things are not missed. My opinion, others may disagree.

There is a lot more to it, on a medium to large scale effort anyway, than just picking up trash. What, where, when, insurance , artifact preservation, hazardous waste and more can all come into play.

On the small, nearly clandestine scale less of that applies . . .usually.

The problem often becomes less how to remove them and more on what to do with them. If they are on public lands now, then the entity that has jurisdiction will want you to ensure the items are disposed of properly for the areas involved. The example of televisions are electronic waste and in some areas require special disposal processes. Other types of materials would or may have similar issues.

I believe the California consumers have already paid the price for this with the "you're buying electronics so we're going to punish you" tax they put on everything with a power switch. Last time I hauled a load to a dump out there they had an area set up for such things, no extra charge.

It is not about the cost but rather the process when removing waste from public lands in some areas. That process can have requirements on how it is documented, removed, handled and then disposed and more so with waste that has been determined to be hazardous.

Dennis is correct. I am very familiar with disposal and salvage processes in the CCC (Communist Country of California). There is a LOT of paperwork and red tape to get through when dealing with large (anything more than individual) quantities of, what the states deems, hazardous waste.

Haven't you seen DaveK's aircraft carrier deck on the roof of his H2? The rig even dons armor when required to prevent undue damage from jets missing the wire.

Unreal. After reading all that has been said, I guess it was a good thought and I will leave it at that. I do not have the time nor the inclination to deal with the idiotic bureaucracy of the CCC. I guess no good deed goes unpunished. I sure do breath a sigh of relief when I cross the Colorado River. With that said, I am planning an escape from the CCC today and will be in freemans land this evening. If anyone wants to shoot or have some fun in Havasu, I will be there until Sun or Monday. Feel free to contact me.

I'd love to head out there this weekend, but I'm in 29P wrenching this weekend (finally dealing with that electrical issue, once and for all!).
