Ollie-

Sorry for the late reply but I am busy, busy at work. I completely understand the water issue and will haul what is necessary to be safe.
On the San Jacinto hike, I am not syaing I am not or won't go but that we really need to check out conditions first (and I know you agree) and you are obviously doing your research. Jacinto will bite you. It claims lives nearly every year from people making stupid mistakes. Te supplies in that cabin are not for every day use. THose are emergency supplies left there by people who have a little excess when they hit the top. So that when people make those mistakes they have something to try and get by on until help arrives or weather clears, etc.
The info I posted was done so to show that there was no agreement on whether water was or was not availabIe to filter or chemically treat. The summit hut was mentioned as a source for an emergency not something you would count on. Hauling it was the best advice given.

Checking conditions is a prerequisite to making the final call as to whether that particular day will be a go or not but a plan has to be made first and it seems that July and August are definitely the safest months of the year. I sailed my family over to Catalina (not Avalon, yuck. Sorry Steve.) dozens of times in all the seasons through out the years and always made a vow to never let the pressure of the calendar put my family at risk. The channel can be a simple crossing but at times the weather can change dramatically in an instant and leave the under prepared in potentially deadly conditions. If the weather looked bad we stayed an extra day or two till it cleared. I'll do the same for back packing, I want to live to be a grandpa.

Thanks again for your time and advice.
