Mortar sites like this are common and if you look at the resources found in the Julian area and the proximity of this area you can imagine this is a great place to live off the land.

As mentioned above the Sierra's have some remote and gorgeous areas.

Here are several pictures of a trip I took in 2013 to Coyote Creek and Funnel Lake area 10 thousand feet above Bishop. Here is a link to view the complete trip report. http://phils-treks-and-trips.blogspot.c ... -results=1

The trail is relative easy and a high clearance vehicle (pickup, SUV, stock jeep, etc) would be able to make it. The only difficult part is a 25 yard sand hill that has to be climbed when leaving Funnel Lake. With some momentum the hill came be climb.

I like spring, early July, because of the wild flowers and lack of fire restrictions. Later in summer there can be open fire restrictions. This is a pack it in...pack it out area and you will need to bring water. It's only 30 miles from Bishop but if you are going to explore the valley and some of the trails, it would be wise to bring extra fuel. There is fishing so you will need a license. There are also bears about, didn't see any but saw tracks alone one of the creeks we crossed.
