o Beware the gimmicky products and businesses that make a living selling the uninformed person/family "crap." I would suggest that you research and make sound decisions on items that you could possibly and will use even without a disaster.
o Try to insure all items are dual purpose. Things that you use camping, for instance, are a good place to get started. Not into camping? Well, you should at least try and practice with your gear because there is nothing worse than trying to use equipment that has never been tested or you cannot deploy properly. Build confidence in yourself and your gear!
o Places like your local Wally World, sporting goods and again...LDS affiliated store can be a good place to go shopping after you have done your homework. Honeyville Farms in Rancho, has good sales and a plethora of preparedness goods. Yes, they do have some cheap solutions, but not many, and hopefully you can tell the difference between the gimmicks and good quality product. They have seminars for cooking with freeze dried goods and cast iron on the weekends. A personal "recommend:" http://shop.honeyville.com/

o Honeyville Store: http://honeyville.com/store/events/cate ... amonga-ca/
o Work smart. Know that everything you do will necessitate hydration and every calorie you spend should be replaced if you want to stay healthy in bad times.
o Be prepared to use the barter system. No amount of money may be worth someone else's food or water supplies. But personal protection or help with security measures or communication can become very important to some folks and these could become your "get out of jail card" for that rainy day.
o START now. Do not over step your budget, but seriously the best time to start this process is NOW. As you grow your knowledge and experience you will become more confident in your shopping prowess and successful additions to your "kit." If you can pay insurance to some who sits behind a desk/phone/envelope and knows nothing about you; why wouldn't you invest in yourself and your family for peace of mind! This you have direct control over.
o Research some of the worst in order to prepare yourself for the potential here in the US: http://www.naturalnews.com/040249_bosni ... egies.html
