ALTERNATE COMMS

There are several non Ham forms of communication that are very worthy of mention here, and can be a valuable piece of your gear in the wilderness. Satellite communications have made significant strides in recent years and there are a number of consumer grade devices that can be of benefit. I am featuring only three such devices below, but we know there are more. There is one that we will just mention here - the Sat Phone. Keep in mind that the type of satellite that your phone uses will determine the availability of a signal. There are several on the market and this is one area where you will need to do your research.

Here are some other devices:

SPOT

From the Spot website:
SPOT Gen3 gives you a critical, life-saving line of communication when you travel beyond the boundaries of cell service. The latest generation of award-winning SPOT devices, SPOT Gen3 lets family and friends know you're okay, or if the worst should happen, sends emergency responders your GPS location - all with the push of a button. Add this rugged, pocket-sized device to your essential gear and stay connected wherever you roam.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

CALDWELL LEAD SLED DFT 2

If you spend time at the range for load development, sighting in your rifle for hunting, testing a new rifle, or target shooting, you know the value of having a good shooting rest. Sand bags, jackets and vehicle hoods can be helpful, but really don't give you the stability and ease of use of a good rifle rest. When its time to take the human part out of your quest for accuracy, you need something that is stable, easy to adjust, well made, and able to reduce the effect of recoil. Battenfeld Technologies manufacturers a shooting rest that offers all of these qualities in their Caldwell Lead Sled DFT2. This is a superior shooting rest and should be a part of your range gear. See:http://www.btibrands.com/product/lead-sled-dft-2/

From the Battenfeld website:
The Lead Sled® DFT™ 2 (Dual Frame Technology) provides shooters with the industry’s best recoil reduction system and the versatility to fit virtually any shotgun or rifle, all built around a precision shooting platform. A key feature of the DFT 2 is the ability to slide the front cradle back and forth along the Dual Frame for optimal length adjustment.

• Dual frame design disperses a maximum amount of recoil energy
• 18” of adjustment to fit rifles and shotguns of virtually any size
• Holds up to 100 pounds of lead shot
• The Lead Sled DFT 2 weighs approx. 24
pounds and is 30” long by 12” wide
