list

Pros
  • A very versatile set of dutch oven accessories
  • Works very well as a pizza oven
  • Doubles as a small charcoal grill with adjustable heat
  • Can be used as a serving stand with adjustable heat
  • Most parts will fit in a 12" dutch oven for storage and transport
Cons
  • Charcoal holder gets very hot requiring heavy gloves to adjust
  • Charcoal holder can be awkward to adjust
  • Kickstand / Lid Lifter is awkward to sit down when holding a lid
  • Oven and stand can be a little unstable when used as a serving stand
  • You probably don't want to use the grill as a steamer after it's been used as a charcoal grill
Conclusion

The 4 piece kit is $112.96 although you may get a popup coupon for 20% off. Unless you really want to experiment around with unconventional uses for your dutch oven it probably isn't worth price.

Test Using 425D Coleman white gas Stove

5 Frosted.jpg

I don't expect to have my 3 burner Camp Chef stove on most trip - only base camp ones.
So, this was an important first step in testing the results with the 425D Coleman white gas stove.

This test was with 5 Cinnamon rolls (quick cook time and cheep enough to discard if failure)

My concern was that the defector plate and the Dutch over may not be sufficiently centered over the burner.
With only 5 rolls & suggest bake time of 13-17 minutes, I off set them in the pot toward the center of the stove. I feel ( but need to experiment) that for items with a longer cook time, the typical rotation every 15 minutes will likely solve this issue.

I added a trivet and a baking pan into the mix this time. The results were much better with a nicely baked bottom to the roll.

Preheated Oven best as I could & buttered the pan.

At 7 minutes into the baking, I removed the Dutch oven lid and placed the Dome back on for an addition 14 minutes. This was a tip
I was told to brown up the tops. (all the timing is / was a guess on my part).

Bruce talked about the Camp Maid.

Volcano Grill

This is a nice accessory. Besides its charcoal (and propane) grill features, it can enclose a 12" Dutch oven with bottom coals, providing a wind break. If you're careful, you can cook on surfaces that are not heat resistant ... though not recommended since coals always seem to inadvertently drop when rearranging them.

However, I found it to take up a large amount of space (18" x 18" x 6") even in its collapsed configuration, but use it at home when using charcoal. Something to consider if you have space for it. It weighs 22 pounds.

Volcano makes a fiberglass cover to keep the heat in. My wife is sensitive to fiberglass and hates this, but it seems to work somewhat.

I did mill down tabs on my 12" deep Lodge to fit better into the Volcano.

Fireside Outdoor Pop-Up Firepit with "Frontier Grates"

https://firesideoutdoor.com/

Fireside Outdoor makes a "Pop-Up Fire Pit". Its original intent is as a fire pit for use in areas with none. The bottom is stainless steel mesh, so fine ashes will drop through. The fire pit is 4 square feet, so reasonably large.

If you're interested, check out YouTube videos by searching "pop-up fire pit".

The metal pieces did not come well finished. I sanded sharp edges which might otherwise be dangerous during assembly.

Fireside Outdoor Pop-Up Fire Pit

The fire pit doesn't really "pop up", but can be quickly assembled within 2 minutes or so.

The carrier encloses the potentially dirty fire pit components within a bag 30" length and 5" diameter, around 8 pounds. This isn't exactly small, but I find I can more easily stash this than, for example, a Volcano.

Fireside Outdoor Frontier Grates

These are simply angled pieces of stainless steel to provide support for a Dutch oven. Depending on your Dutch oven size, its legs might interfere with the fixed separation of the supports, so it helps to use a steel pizza pan underneath. Also, the supports don’t provide enough distance to lift the legs clear of the mesh on the bottom. The sides of the fire pit provide a good wind break.

The fire pit is 2' square. A grill accessory can be simultaneously used to charcoal grill while cooking with a Dutch oven.

Fireside Outdoor Ember Mat

Siliconized fiberglass will catch embers and ash, promoting fire safety and allowing ash disposal in areas where ground fires aren't allowed. Opened size is a large 68" x 60", weighs 4 pounds. Lay it out underneath your fire pit.

A Crack!

I like CampChef "Deluxe" Dutch Ovens since they come with a thermometer slot and the lid has legs that permit it to be flipped and used as a shallow skillet. Also, I like the 10" size as it's sufficient for four to five people.

We were in Anza Borrego and I was just about to put some bacon on the heated lid when I noticed it had a crack. I wasn't sure if the crack would let bacon grease drip through so I didn't use it.

I emailed Camp Chef asking them if I had somehow misused the lid by heating it on a propane stove. They said I hadn't and sent me an entirely new 10" Deluxe Dutch oven after I emailed them a copy of my receipt and a picture of the crack.

I appreciate that kind of product support!
