Larry,

The KPC-3 is still a viable unit, especially if you use it with a computer. While the original KPC-3 has been replaced by the KPC-3 Plus. The Plus Feature were mostly in the area of standalone trackers. While there have been advancements in the field of standalone trackers, your initial investment can still be used with software to achieve those same advancements.

If I remember right your laptop did not have any built in. I would recommend you get a second usb serial port adapter and an appropriate serial cable (I imagine there might be one included with your items you posted).

As for the software we can discuss the merits of each package and I suggested a wi-fi enabled location so that we can download the software and any documentation we might need.

I think you are actually quite prepared already, you have a lot on hand and all you need is to put it together.

I'm not sure what my laptop doesn't have built-in...It has one USB port, one 9-pin serial port, wi-fi, etc....The Kantronics has a couple of cables with connectors on one end, to allow for user installation of the other connector depending on application, I assume. If you are suggesting a USB to serial adapter to allow for 2 serial ports, I'll check my bag-of-goodies to see what I have...

Thanks... ;)

Here is some interesting news. It appears that APRS coverage, through repeaters, is a little more extensive that I had imagined. According to these sites, the Grand Canyon is covered (or some parts are covered.) Whether we will actually be able to get coverage where we are going is yet to be seen.

See:

1. http://www.tapr.org/pipermail/aprssig/2 ... 13851.html

2. http://aprs.org/aprs-parks.html

From Repeater list at http://www.n7dps.com/NEVADA.htm .
Packet Digipeaters

144.3900 N7ZEV-1 (WIDE) Low Potosi - APRS
144.3900 N7ZEV-2 (WIDE) Apex - APRS
144.3900 N7ZEV-3 (WIDE) Angel - APRS
144.9300 W7SCE-4 (CQQDX4) Mt Hualapai - DX Packet Cluster

145.0100 KJ7RA (LAS) Angel's Peak, links/St George -

I think we should hold off until you have this part. I'd like to be able to get you completely up and running and test everything the day we meet.

Or can you expedite it's delivery?

On my trip in October, the only time I received any distant APRS traffic was when I was at higher elevations. Most of the time I only received APRS from one of the members of our group. I find the same thing in the Mojave National Preserve. In Death Valley, only other users within the valley.

When you have this working you'll notice the same. You'll be in canyons and valleys, hearing no APRS traffic, Then when up on the top of a mountain you'll start receiving traffic from neighboring States.

We were planning on at least two meetings, One to get detailed information on software and hardware options, the other to test and tweak.
