NOTE FOR EVERYONE ON THIS RUN:
If you plan on exploring the mines or the areas around the mines you should bring the following:
1. good hiking boots/shoes
2. long pants for protection from brush and rocks
3. good leather gloves for climbing in the mines
4. hat for head protection in mines
5. flashlight with fresh batteries
6. an HT (a ham walkie talkie)
I am going to post historical information about the mines, but only after I have permission from the publisher of some articles I have seen.
FYI one mine requires a climb up a cliff wall with the use of a steel cable. The hike to this mine will be through some very slushy muddy areas and low top shoes will fill up quickly if you are not very, very careful. If you have high tops, I'd wear 'em.

We will be visiting at least three and as many as five different mines on this trip, including the 3rd and 8th most productive gold mines in the Cuyamacas. Some years back, I discovered one of the best historical accounts of the of the Julian/Banner/Cuyamaca mining districts of the 1800s and 1900s. The book, “A Good Camp” by Leland Fetzer, is published by Sunbelt Publications of San Diego, CA. See
http://www.sunbeltbooks.com .
The Publisher has kindly granted permission to reproduce portions of this book and below, is information on the Ranchita Mine. I will have a copy of this book for each member of this run. If you will not be joining us on the run, you may purchase a copy of the book by going to:
http://www.sunbeltbook.com/BookDetails.asp?id=68 or calling (619) 258-4911.
