Here is a comparison of different paths from the trip today.

I was running WIDE1-1, WIDE2-2:
WIDE2-2

sdnative was running WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1:

I think the tracks are rather similar... The differences I believe are due to the fact that I'm running Smart Beacon so every minute turn I made triggered another point. I was able to watch Eric on my GPS tracking right on top of me since I was so close to him.

Other differences (you vs. me):

50W vs. 10W

Smart Beaconing vs. 2 minute fixed interval.

Sick new mud tires vs cr**py ATs

You are running Wide1-1, Wide2-2. If you look at the marker from aprs.fi, it will indicate this. I will switch to Wide2-2, but I feel your better coverage has to do more with power than hops. I want to do more testing with everything the same except the path (I wish I would have thought of it yesterday).

EDIT: power and frequency of transmissions than hops.

Thanks Eric. I updated the post to include WIDE1-1 on mine.

Hector -

What should I be using as the message port ?

Is it the com port the computer connects to the TNC with, or the default unproto port (1)...I've got it set as the computer port (in my case, com 6), so maybe that's stopping the output/input of messages...

Roughly half of my transmissions are not making it to an Igate. Not sure if that's power level too low or a path issue.

That's probably another reason why Ollie is getting a fuller breadcrumb trail, the sheer number of transmissions.

Anyone know how to disect this? Does the * mean that the hop is used (decremented)? If so, why isn't the Wide2-1 decremented also? If a high level wide receives a Wide1-1does it just die there and does the Wide2-1 following just get ignored? Specifically, if a high level wide receives a Wide1-1, Wide2-1 packet, does it decrement the Wide1-1 and send it on its way for another two hops (the Wide2-1), or does it think that it is done?

Wow Eric... That post says way more using the bread crumb map. That is crazy. What a difference. Maybe it's the power level.

Well, Eric, I can't help you at all in analyzing that data;

but I did want to present you with the honorary

OAUSA Longest Post Ever Award!!!

What should I be using as the message port ?

Is it the com port the computer connects to the TNC with, or the default unproto port (1)...I've got it set as the computer port (in my case, com 6), so maybe that's stopping the output/input of messages...

Larry,

For most systems it should stay at port 1. The field is there in case you are using a multiport system (more than one TNC or Frequency), it is also there to send a message via the APRS-IS internet system.

So again it should stay at port one for most applications. It has nothing to do with com port settings. I know that is confusing.

Hector

The * indicates the path segment has been used. A high level Wide will not process a wide1-1 again wide1-1 is a low level relay and is meant to fill-in an area between distant Wides. Again in the southern California especially in populated areas the use of Wide1-1 could trigger tens of low level digipeaters, that would in turn retransmit the packet at the same time, ensuring packet collisions that would effectively kill the information contained in the packet.

I did not know that. Thanks!

So your recommended path is only Wide2-2, not Wide1-1, Wide2-2.

Now for another wrench, what do you recommend for power levels? I try to stick with 10W, but some of the self-contained trackers and of course the APRS HTs are only 5W or less. Are my chances of hitting an Igate any better by bumping the power from 10W to say 20W?
