You can do it, but I wouldn't. Grapevine takes you down to the 18. I always air down, so you would be running on 18 for a while aired down. I think the better way is to take the trails 3n16 to either Jacoby and do Jacoby or all the way to the 18. Then you are on the 18 a short ways to 3n03. There are two ways into Rattlesnake, Heartbreak, actually four. I generally come in from Yucca and get lost, but have fun and find our way around. Hearbreak has some tough areas.

I would like to spend a day exploring the whole area. You could get lunch at Pioneertown.

So it sounds like you'd be accessing Rattlesnake from the top? Would you run it all the way down to the 247 and then come back up the 18, or run Rattlesnake both ways?

If you are up for a day of exploring that area we'd be happy to join you. Friday or Saturday?

I think if we have enough interest to support it, we should have a hard, medium and easy run on saturday. If not enough interest, maybe combine the hard/medium or the medium/easy. Since people will be arriving and leaving at different times, the friday and sunday runs can be less structured.

Can we list the trails that are open, and their difficulty?

I think we have:

John Bull (hard)
Dishpan Springs (hard)
Gold Mountain (med/hard)

Heartbreak Ridge (?)
Rattlesnake Canyon (?)
Jacoby Canyon (?)
Willow Creek (easy)

others...

Some of us will be coming up from San Diego, so what about hitting some trails on the way. Cleghorn, 2N17x, others?

I dont know this area at all, so I'm looking for some direction here.

EDIT: forget that last part. Just looked up where cleghorn, 2n17x, etc were and they are too far out of the way.

Hi All,
I was running trails today at Big Bear. The majority of the trails are just north east of the lake. They are close together. John Bull is the most difficult. Remember Bull has two parts. The first part--going east to west is medium. If you have a forest service map it starts at 3n02.http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisitorma ... ino/#north" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A good combination is to start on 3n69 at the 18 (gold Mtn) and then turn right on 3n16 and do Jacoby canyon and end on the 18. Or turn left at 3n16 and go to 3n02, rt turn and go to burnt flats--Old homestead area and a spring. Good place to have lunch. On the way out, turn rt on 3n10. This is the intro or first part of Bull. 3n32 t's into 3n10. 3n32 takes you back to 3n16. Or you can continue on to do the difficult section of bull. The Holcom trail is closed due the fire.

Rattlesnake and heartbreak are on the other side of the 18 not far away. It is a fun area with both hard and easy areas. I am more familiar with coming in from Yucca, but would like to take a day to hit the whole area. As long as there isn't much traffic you can do alot of trails. I got stuck for a short time on Bull today behind a stock FJ and Rodeo.

Scale 1 to 5
Bull intro3.5
Bull 5
Jacoby 2
3n16 1
3n32 1
burnt flat 2
Gold mtn 3.5
Southside
Clarks grade 1.3
Rattlesnake from yucca 2.5
Heartbreak 3

I am tired. Talk to ya all later. Eric call me if you want or need details.

So, did you want to go in via the 62/Yucca or the 330/18?

I think I'll pass on JB for now unless I get a wild hair the day of. I'd like to do the Gold Mnt/JB Intro/Burnt Flats run you mentioned sometime over the weekend. I also want to see heartbreak and rattlesnake.

Maybe we can come up through Yucca and explore the south side heartbreak, etc.) on the way in on Friday?

So Dishpan is closed?

How was JB? Did the stock FJ get hammered?

I'm gonna try and make it out to join everyone...I'll probably head out friday morning.

I'm coming from Long Beach, and I think it would be cool if we could get a small group together meet up at Cleghorn in the morning, and run Cleghorn to 2N17X and whatever else all the way to Arrowhead. I'm not too familiar with the trails past 2N17X, but I'm told we can make it most of the way to BB on the dirt, which would be a fun way to spend friday, then play around in BB over the weekend. I can lead Cleghorn, but I'd rather someone else take it from there.

I've been up to Big Bear about a half dozen times already this summer. I've been running all the hard trails, JB, Dshpan, Hrtbrk, GM, and have done them all several times. I never thought I'd say this, But, I'm kind of getting bored with them. That, and they are taking there toll on the underside of my rig :o .

So the reason I say all of that is...

I'd be willing to lead a run on an easy trail on Saturday. There is a trail on the south side of Big Bear Lake called Skyline Drive. It's 13m long, and runs the ridge up behind the ski resorts. It’s rated easy in the Wells book, suitable for any stock SUV. It has great views of the lake and surrounding area. Clark’s summit is a short trip up a side road and also has great views. This is a great run for anyone who likes things more on the scenic side, lots of opportunities for pictures. This trail can be run in about 2 hours, so if we run it in the morning, there would still be plenty of time to go run another trail, or maybe take a dip in the lake  .

Post up if you’re interested.

Hi Eric,
I am going to try to clear my morning calander for that Fri. I will know tomarrow. I do not know if dishpan is closed. Holcomb creek is closed. I will do whatever trails you all want. I gave some suggestions above. We have to remember that TTORA and a group from FJ cruisers are all claiming that they will be there. Hence, I would think that the common run trails: GM, BUll, Dish(if Open)and white mountain will get crowded on Sat. If a group of us gets there early on fri we should be able to run all the common trails, including Burnt flat( not many people go there) and Jacoby( considered to easy by many TTORA members) without crowds.

Rattlesnake and HB have alot of options and trails involved. The few times I have run these trails I have not seen too many people. I think KJ Steve was up there a few weeks ago. I wonder if he saw much traffic? Hence, this may be a good area to explore for Sat as it could take the whole day. We could go in one of three ways from BB. I had to go to my trail books to look up info on going in this way. We could do trails from BB to HB and the pontiac Sluice and then hit the trail area for Rattlesnake. It is easy to get off the beaten path there. We could go to Pioneer town for lunch. If you have never been there, it is worth a look. Then come back through Rattlesnake to 247 and take the roads back to BB. These are just thoughts and options. I am familiar with most of the area and would be happy to help with any concerns. I look forward to other peoples input. As far as starting on Cleghorn and taking trails across, I will pass.

Hi Braydon, good to hear from you. This could be a run like last year. I have been to BB at least 10 times since feb of this year. I stayed off GM the last two times just because of repetition and I hope it has changed some due to the weather. I am looking forward to these trails with the folks on this board, especially if they are unfamiliar. How familiar are you with HB and ratlesnake from BB to Pionneer and then up to the 247? I usually go in from Yucca to HB area and then Rattle to 247.

Pat, I would join you, but we'll be coming up from the east side of the lake (I think).

I looked in my wells book, and it looks like you can go all the way from the 15 to BB in the dirt, but it looks like you have to go through willow creek, dishpan and holcomb, and at least holcomb is closed. Of course there are probably other roads, but it doesn't show them in the book.
