O.F.,
You have it all nothing to it but to do it.
So do it already?

Probably not a wrong setting. I was monitoring and logging the input from my TT4 using UIview. My GPS (Garmin 60csx) came up with a database error precisely when it received the bolded sentence from the log:OLLIE wrote:For some reason I get a "Data Base Error" alarm when certain waypoints enter the GPS but I imagine it's because I have a setting wrong somewhere.
Very good catch Eric... That makes sense now.sdnative wrote:Probably not a wrong setting. I was monitoring and logging the input from my TT4 using UIview. It is clearly an incorrectly formatted string, but it is caused by my TNC or the APRS station? Not sure yet...
Right now I haven't tried interfacing it. I have the cable hooked up but haven't had the time to try enything yet. There are two serial typr ports on the back of the head unit for the Kenwood. One goes to the USB port. The other cable splits off to the microphone and headset jacks of the computer. The USB port cable is used to update your radio setting (freqs, preset, settings, etc.) with software on your computer. The cable going to the headphone and microphone jacks is the data cable. It is used for the echolink and APRS interface. THese two cables are sold seperately and the programming software for your computer is a free download from Kenwood.cruiserlarry wrote:Ollie -
What are you using to connect your DM-710A to your Toughbook ?
Since the Kenwood has an internal TNC, is there a direct cable from the DM-710A to the USB port on the laptop ?
(Guess what I'm thinking about doing soon ???![]()
I think that all you are going to have to do is run the data wire from the radio (that plugs into the faceplate) to a data wire in your serial port on your laptop and you'll be set. You won't need any external TNC's anymore since it's built into the radio.cruiserlarry wrote:I understand about the direct link to the Kenwood with an external GPS, which then displays on the DM-710A head unit...I'm wondering how to output the Kenwood's TNc / 2m data to my laptop, which has an integrated GPS and the APRS mapping program UI-View 32 and Precision Maps 8.1 for a moving map view of the other stations in realtime...
That would work IF the Kenwood is able to output it's TNC data, as opposed to just allowing the input of GPS data...will the DM-710A do that ?OLLIE wrote:I think that all you are going to have to do is run the data wire from the radio (that plugs into the faceplate) to a data wire in your serial port on your laptop and you'll be set. Yes sir... The TM-D710A swings both directions (IN and OUT) with the faceplate cable. I don't know about the DM-710A thoug...???cruiserlarry wrote:That would work IF the Kenwood is able to output it's TNC data, as opposed to just allowing the input of GPS data...will the DM-710A do that ?OLLIE wrote:I think that all you are going to have to do is run the data wire from the radio (that plugs into the faceplate) to a data wire in your serial port on your laptop and you'll be set.
