The VX-170 is a compact, high-performance FM hand-held providing up to five Watts of RF power, along with big audio output (700 mW) and unmatched protection against the elements!
Protected against water ingress to IPX7 specifications (submersion for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 3 feet), the VX-170 features long operating time, thanks to the supplied 1400 mAh NiMH Battery Pack.
The 16-key VX-170 includes direct keyboard frequency entry and direct DTMF input, along with quick, one-touch access to YAESU’s exciting and fun WiRES-II™ VoIP Internet Linking system!
This is a nice little inexpensive handheld that can handle the abuse of outdoor activities. I carry one with me to loan out to fellow adventurers or as a back-up to my main handheld. I would recommend this radio to anyone as a first radio when they are just trying to get into amateur radio.

I have one of these, and it has served me very well. It was my first radio, and I still use it most of the time. (OK, enough laughing about my signal.)
Seriously, I have used it a lot, and it performs really well. Oh, and I have dropped it a couple of times, too. It's rugged.

Well since I just passed the Technician Test last nigh, I think I will start off with a handheld.
This looks like a good starter rig.

Yaesu handhelds have always worked well for me, and while I do not have a VX-170, I think it would be an excellent radio for anyone looking for a single band radio that's tough and reliable. It's a perfect handheld for use out on the trails, IMO - high output, weather resistant, compact, versatile.
Oh, yeah, don't forget very reasonably priced...
