2009-01-01: Hike to Kitchen Creek Falls
Posted: Thu Jan 01, 2009 7:42 pm
On the southern slopes of the Laguna Mountains, the Pacific Crest Trail passes just 200 yards above a hidden series of waterfalls in Kitchen Creek. Here, water from about 20 square miles of drainage flows through a narrow section in the bedrock, and tumbles about 150 vertical feet over water-polished slabs. Now that was a fun climb!
After a major storm passes through, the sound of falling water gives away the location of the falls; at other times, finding them may be a bit difficult A short stretch of moderate scrambling is required to reach them. I parked just outside Boulder Oaks Campground off Old Highway 80, strapped on my backpack and off I went!

The trail can be narrow and brushy at times.

Cattle gate.

Passing under Interstate 8.

Manzanita is thick through here.

The sounds of the freeway are fading.

I think I know where I'm going deer hunting next season.

Gettin' up higher now...

I found it!

Ah that water feels so good after hiking up here!

Yay, now I get to climb down to the bottom!

Oh that feels good!

Time to relax!

Back to where I started.
