Call for help

Yesterday, I received a call from SteeevO of ruggedrocksoffroad.com, concerning an offroading event (race), known as "King of the Hammers", which will be taking place in late February.

SteeevO, as you may recall, was the one who helped big dave retrieve his abandoned vehicle from the deep freeze in the Cajon Pass. More to the point however. It seems that the organizers of the race are in need of assistance in the communications department and SteeevO has volunteered. More help is aparently needed. Below, is Steven's e-mail, giving information about the event and what type of help is needed.

If you are interested in seeing the event and helping out with communications and the race, please contact SteeevO here at OAUSA. Good luck SteeevO.

The '09 King of the Hammers race is the 2nd annual official event. This race is a combination of desert racing and rockcrawling (how much more extreme can you get?) it goes through 13 different canyons of Johnson valley and covers 50 miles of desert racing in between. this year there is only 6 or 7 checkpoints but I'm hearing that the race will be longer and harder than last year, so in my mind I'm seeing radio comms needed in some pretty remote locations.

This year it's taking place on February 26 & 27. (Thursday and Friday)
the afternoon - night of the 26th is mainly getting everything situated, race briefings, checkpoint assignments etc.
the 27th everyone is up bright and early and everyone working checkpoints gets out to their check to get cones and radios in place etc..

as each race vehicle comes by a check we have them make a complete stop, we take their number and the time they arrived at the check.
the time is logged on paper and is also called into base via radio, which is on means dry lake for live online updates to be posted online.

This is a non-spectator event so everyone that is there will be part of the race. Lots of industry people will be there. Lots of sponsors etc...

A DVD video trailer of last years event is here:

Thanks,
-Steven

If this weren't during the week I'd be there. Plus I have a trip planned for the weekend prior and I don't think I culd turn the rig around quickly enough if I could make it.

Thanks guys, i know that since it's during the week it makes it pretty rough for most people.
I'm trying to get an update on where we stand as far as radio operators (& radios) but from the sounds of it we're kindof in bad shape...Most of these guys that are out there don't know too much about radio. We will be operating out of the normal 2M band  152.** on race frequencies so we'll need a radio that operates up there. also, the track is BIG. with mountains in between so it can be difficult to get a signal from some of these remote checkpoints back to base & a base station type antenna up on a pole would work out better than your avg mobile antenna. (I had a rough time last year w/ my regular mobile)

As soon as i get more information i'll get you guys updated.

Thanks,
-Steven

Like I said... I may be able to help. Either post here or send me a PM with info (include the required radio frequencies) sooner rather than later, even if not complete.

Thanks,
A

So i finally got an update from the guys putting together KOH.
It turns out that they should be covered for the event with the volunteers that they have. but if you are interested in the race and want to volunteer anyways, then you are welcome to do so.

i don't know about this year, but last year all the volunteers were there the night before for a pre-race briefing type of thing, a raffle, campfire, and to sign wavers etc.

just a heads up but i'm not 100% sure how they are doing it this year
