Mojave Rd April 2009

Another week off from school, another family vacation in the Rover. For a variety of reasons, we settled on a shorter trip this spring: The Mojave Rd.
One can find some very odd places to eat in the desert:

At this establishment, salad dressing is a delight that should not be taken lightly.

After spending some time looking for the dotted line that divides Ca and NV...

Evan settled for having one foot in each state.

I haven't seen too many of these guys (gals?) around:

We were lucky enough to be in the Mojave as an unusual cold front moved through. We camped in bellow freezing temps (27 when we woke up) with 40-50 mph wind gusts (we only had a dozen or so 25+mph gusts where we camped) and snow showers above/rain showers bellow 3000'.
Still, it doesn't get much better than being with family alone and self sufficient in the desert.

Finally the front passed and it started to warm up a bit.

Evan's first stone:

Afton Canyon

The high winds had wiped clean all tracks... at times it felt like we had found a new land.

What is it about boys that they always find sticks and rocks to play with?

When we had arrived at the west end of The Mojave Rd and informed Evan that we were heading home, he started crying. "I don't want to go home... I want to go camping!" Yeah, he's a keeper.
