FJOllie, Sunnygrill, and I were discussing this on Saturday, so I thought I'd put it out to everyone:

What was the most outrageous reason you have used to convince your spouse that the mod you want to do is necessary ??? :o

Was your attempt successful ??? :P

Looking forward to your responses.... :o

Well, since my sig-other doesn't give a squat what I do with my truck, I only have myself to convince... and it doesn't take much!
Anyway, I justified the Baja Rack with a need for a place to mount my Hi-Lift and gas cans.

I'm in the same boat. If it'll make trips safer, or help in a mishap, or prevent one, I get it.

Larry,

My wife loves to wheel. I had sold my jeep and we were wheeling her 4-runner around Tahoe. Hit parts of the Rubicon. Put a decent scratch on the rear quarter panel. We were eating lunch on the trail and she looks at the scratch and says, "time to get another truck for trails." She decided the FJ was cute. She's a tough one. I showed her some pictures of FJ's with lifts and sliders and bumpers etc. She says,"Thats what our FJ should look like." With in one week of buying the rig off to All Pro for everything and the day before to the tire shop.

Yeah, I really have to work the wife to get mods. We then left for Ouray, which is a custom in our household--new 4-wheeler means off to Ouray to hit the trails. When we got home and were looking at the pictures, she wanted to know why the front bumper had an opening. I told her it was for a winch. Her response was to get a winch and fill in the hole-it looks stupid. I really had to work my photographic skills to make it look stupid, but I got the winch. Taking her to your shop when you did my lights was a mistake. She looked at everything on your rig and wanted to know why we didn't have one of everything in the store or on your rig-snorkle, roof rack etc. Glad I rented a car to take her to the beach for lunch.

Yeah, I have to get up extra early to figure out how to talk her into mods for the FJ. Last week I told her I was getting a crawler. She looked at me funny and then said "Is it for off-roading?" I said yes and she said, "then get it." 8-)

Regards, SSC

I got my suspension by telling my wife I blew a shock when I hit a speed bump too fast at work. Naturally I implied that I couldn't buy a shock for just one side. They come in matched and balanced sets for the entire vehicle. I also told her that it was cheaper to buy aftermarket components because Toyota was so expensive. So that was the story for getting my suspension.

I got my 3 inch Sway Away lift after telling her the tires were hitting the wheel well (which they were, but only at extreme compression and it was not causing any damage.)

Because she's always worried about me getting lost, the CB was easy. The ham radio was a little harder. "If you have a CB, why do you need another radio?" "Well honey, if I'm broken down and no one around is listening on the CB, I'm sure to get someone on the ham!" :D
