One of my friends has a nice HF setup in his Jeep.

How he uses the antenna:
16' sections driving in open country. The mast can be easily lowered in tight places.
32' sections when stationary
Smaller NMO HF antennas for driving in town.

I'm going to upgrade my license very soon. I'm starting to budget for this expense.

I'm considering purchasing the same equipment he used. He's gone though several variations of this and has reported that this setup works very well.

So far from my research, this looks like a good fit for me. I'm curious if anyone here has any other suggestions.

THat's the same thing we used in the military on the Hummer's and other vehicles. There might be an FJ at the BPS Meet & Greet this Saturday with that same setup on it.

No I did not. FJ-Piper runs this type set up in his rig.

Piper even has the actual Hummer mount on his bumper. Pretty durn cool.

I am in the process of assembling the parts and pieces that Gordon West recommended in OAUSA net #1 for mobile HF. I will use a Yaesu FT-857D radio (installed) with a Firestick (CB radio) fender mount to mount Ham Stick style fiberglass rod / steel whip antennas that are band speciific. I will have 75m, 40m, 20m, 15m, and 10m whips. Mine are on order directly from MFJ, since they are only $20 each. I also have an MFJ impedence matcher and an MFJ 259B antenna analyzer. I will be able to use the analyzer to set impedence, raise or lower the whip to tune and set SWR and talk away. A friend recommended an automatic tuner. I will see how this works and maybe go that direction.

I have installed the mount but still need to route the coax into the cab. The antennas will be here next week. I am looking forward to getting on the air.

Please post some pics up when you get this complete. I'm thinking about adding a tuner to my arsenal that I have been eyeballing for about a year now. It will tune anything you hook a coax to. It isa great compliment to the 857 or 897. I can't think of the model number right now though.
