2009-07-15: Anza Borrego Scouting Trip

Ollie and I managed to get out into the desert today to do a bit of scouting for BorregoFest. In the 108* heat I was lovin' the AC. Towards the end of the day we ran through Painted Gorge to explore a few trails around Carrizo Mountain we've never been to. On the way in we came across a couple guys walking down the road who had got their truck stuck on a hill. Talk about being at the right place at the right time. I don't know how they would've made it out in that heat. Ollie had them winched out in no time. As for the tail heading up the mountain we did, all I can say is that was the most intense trail I've ever been on. The FJ had to make three point turns to get up the steep, narrow switch-backs. Absolutely no room for error on this one. Can't wait to do it again! :D

What a wild day. Went out to scope out some campsites for BorregoFest and end up saving a few goons and running one of the tighter shelf roads I've been on. Word to the wise... If BorregoWrangler is riding shotgun with you and says, "Hey!!! You know, it would be cool to go and check out that one trail over there." Kindly refuse the offer....         Just kidding John. That was a great day. Glad it all turned out OK.

BTW... I got the same pictures you did but yours turned out better. I think I need a filter on the lense. THe exposures were all too bright in that sun out there.

Seeing that picture of the work truck out there, who could possibly need new window panes in an area so desolate?   Goons is right!

Ollie:

The APRS coverage in AB is quite good. In addition to having ham radios available in each run, it would be wise to have someone running APRS as well. Monitoring each run, with messaging capability - Nice to know!!

Agreed... I was rather amazed to come back and look up my APRS track to see it nailed everything. Not to mention my wife now has another way to track my whereabouts.... :(

I also had APRS running during our night run to that area. My coverage wasn't as comprehensive:

I think it's a setting you have on your APRS setup. I have mine set to intuitive or something like that. It sends My Position every five minutes if I'm traveling over 2 mph. If I'm stopped it will send it one time. Once I start rolling again it commences to send My Position every 5 minutes again. I can adjust that 5 minutes to whatever time span I choose. I'm sure you have the ability to at least shorten the frequency at with your are sending your position.

BTW... John and I were trying to call you on our way home. We tried from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
