California Desert Protection Act of 2010

Title I: California Desert Conservation and Recreation

Sec 101: Amendments to the California Desert Protection Act of 1994

Title XIII: Mojave Trails National Monument.
Title XIV: Sand to Snow National Monument
Title V: Wilderness
Title VI: Vinagre Wash Special Management Area
Title VII: National Park System Additions
Title XVIII: Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Areas

Most additions allow use of existing roads:

"Maintains existing recreation uses, including hunting, vehicular travel on existing open roads and trails, grazing, camping, horseback riding, rock collecting, etc."

Allowances have been made for renewable energy projects, solar and wind:

I wonder how much land will be purchased as part of this?

I've been trying to find and map and there appears to be none publicly available. Please post a link if you can find one.

Indeed, I've been watching this one develop and have been pleasantly surprised at the consistency and relevancy of it's intent and end result.



Now if we could get target shooters to start picking up their brass (kind of surprised more don't, considering ammo prices vs. reloading)...

Who and how are "existing roads" determined? Which roads will be included into the maps if/when the act is passed? How can I assist in determining this? Is this open for further determination?

The Act has many sections about renewable energy.

Are we trading open cross country OHV use for renewable energy bulldozers, wind turbines and questionable use of precious desert water?

I'm naturally skeptical when resource management is changed. Who benefits monetarily (renewable energy companies)? Are the land swaps, donations and government land purchases done in a transparent manner?

Years ago, the historian Dennis Casebier (who re-discovered the Mojave Road http://www.mdhca.org) researched and wrote 4 books called "Guide to the East Mojave Heritage Trail". Which includes the rich history of the area and those that lived there. The DPA of 1994 broke up these trails and made the books useless as a guide. I would like to see these trails re-opened someday so his work and history could be enjoyed again.
