I'm not sure what the *official* plan is for the drive to Canyon de Chelly on the 22nd - I'm guessing we'd be meeting up well before reaching the park?
I know Canyon de Chelly is quite a trek from where I'm at (about 12 hours), and I seem to have a 3-hour head start over most folks. I was thinking about heading up on the 21st, cutting through the mountains and checking out Oatman (old Route 66/mining town) and staying in/around Flagstaff so half of the drive is out of the way. Any takers, or does this interfere with the schedule at all?

Chazz,
I am planning on leaving on the 21st too and spending the evening in Flagstaff. The maximum speed of the Pinzgauer is only 65 mph and I like to keep it down around 55 mph on longer trips. I wouldn't want to hold up the group on the long trek to Canyon de Chelly. Oatman is a cool place to visit. We can discuss meeting in Barstow or somewhere along the way when the time for the trip gets closer.

We will be leaving early on the 21'st. We have about 1,100 miles to go so it will be 2 days of hard driving. (You guys sure we can't have a margarita when we arrive?

)
Here is a link to our tentative route.

We will be overnighting near area 51 in Nevada. So if we are late, well ...

Chazz:
You raise a good point. When we went a few years ago, we broke up the trip into two days. Unfortunately, I can't remember if that was in deference to the total length of the trip or as a "comfort" measure for some of the crew.
Regardless, this is something we need to look into and get some feed back. While I don't mind driving for 15 hours, it makes the following day a little rough. I will run some mileages and do a mapquest trip calculation.
Initially, I anticipated that there would be some caravaning by some of the group and that may still happen. With more info, we can better decide how to proceed.

I'll stay one night in St. George on the way.

I ran a quick Map Quest with the following results, from their website (
http://www.mapquest.com). Their estimate is 10 hours 25 minutes /693 miles.
IF this is true, it is do-able in a day.
Frank, St. George seems out of the way. I trust that you are stopping there for another reason??

Ive made that drive in a day. 10 1/2 hours sounds right. Once you hit the 40 it's smooth sailing.

Based on that, it looks like Kingman might be lunch time for some of us.
From where we are, about the earliest we'll hit I-40 is in Needles, CA. I checked Google again and it says 11.5 hours, but it has 5.5 of those hours just getting to Kingman, which I do frequently in 2.5 hours... I think I'll run my own math for time instead.
We're going to leave early on the 22nd instead, it should take us about 7 hours to get there plus stops. So, anyone want to meet up for lunch at the steakhouse in Kingman?
