No fires of any kind are allowed except for using a portable stove or lantern using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel. check with the San Bernardino National Forest at 909-382-2600. Reservations must be made at least 3 days in advance. This campground requires a 2 day minimum stay on the weekends and a 3 day minimum stay on holiday weekends. Limited parking. No fireworks or firearms discharged at campground Firewood available for $5/bundle at Heart Bar Campground from 5/15-10/15. Rough road to site.

Coon Creek Cabin (CA) HWY 38 FOREST RD. 1N02 Angelus Oaks CA 92305 From Interstate 10 take the Alabama exit in the City of Redlands, CA, to Lugonio Avenue (Hwy 38). Head northeast on Hwy 38 for approximately 31 miles to Forest Service Road IN02. Go approximately 6 miles on IN02 to campground.

Um, if no fires of any kind are allowed, why is fire wood for sale?

I'm sure if the site has fire rings its ok.

That will depend on how dry it gets by the end of June. I can double-check with the USFS when the time gets close.

Also, I already have the required permit if campfires are allowed.

I spoke to the ranger while we were up there, and she is pretty sure fires will still be allowed well into July this year.


The "cabin" is HUGE... plenty of room to set up the radios if that is preferable to canopies. It was really hazy, but we could still make out Palm Springs and Indio to the south. Also, there is a spot up the hill behind the site where you get the same view + north towards Mt. Baldy. Pics...

North of the cabin there is a trail road the runs a shelf up to the top of the ridge. Get some great views of the area including San Gorgornio Mountain. The trail does continue north of the ridge, but drops into some private developments, exiting eventually to the highway.

We took that rode out. Very narrow and beautiful. We liked it a lot. Pin striping is certain on that trail.

That would be a very fair statement. The Jeeps in our group got through not too bad, but us wide-bodies ended up gardening about 30 yards of that trail near the crest. There were also a few downed trees which we winched clear. Definitely a lightly traveled trail.

Well, that road you mention is going to be blocked to the best of our ability at the cabin end. Our stations will be sitting just barely off the intersection of that road close to the cabin. We will have coax and power cords running across it as a necessity.
Steve and I went up last Sunday to do a site survey of the place. With considerations for antennas (available trees) and their alignments, generators and power cord runs, etc. The site is....ahem,...."less than perfect" for a Field Day in these and other regards. But, we think we have a decent plan for station set ups. Unfortunately, we are relying on little or preferably no traffic coming through on that road. Just a heads up!
