Hi I am new here and also new to ham radio.

I will be taking my tech exam on the 22nd and currently looking for a great setup to go with.

I sort of know what APRS is but I am not sure how important a role it plays and if I really need it.

I am currently looking at the Kenwood TM-D710A which have the APRS feature.

I am also looking for a good antenna that I can mount on my rack or a mag mount. I currently have a Wilson CB antenna on my roof so not sure if this will cause any interference or not to the ham antenna.

Being new to this, if anyone can suggestion anything that would be helpful to me I am all ears. :)

Thanks from a future tech still in training.

Welcome aboard OAUSA, and good luck on your test !!!

The Kenwood TM-D710A is an excellent choice for a radio - but it is a top-line model, with many features that you may or may not need. APRS is an awesome system out on the trail or on the road, and it allows you to locate and contact other licensed hams running the system. I think anyone willing to invest in the required equipment will find it worthwhile.

Regarding the Wilson CB antenna, you'll need at least 19" distance, and preferably more, between it and the dual band ham antenna needed to work with the D710A. What antenna to use, and specifically where to mount it, depend on the vehicle's current configuration and your budget - so it's hard to answer in a post without more information....
