Hoping for a little advice.

My wife is ready for something a little newer, so we are looking at selling her 1978 CJ7, the problem is that I have no idea what to ask for it.

It has a lift, I am not sure of the size, I think it is 4" but it was done before we got it.

Motor was rebuilt about 18 months ago by DC Fabrications in Pasadena Ca and has about 7-8000 miles on it

Transmission was built by Chino Hills Transmission after motor was done
Shift kit installed with rebuild
Transfer case was serviced with Trans rebuild

Rear drive line replaced with single cardan driveline from Tri-County Gear about 3 years ago, they also rebuilt the rear end at that time.

rebuilt brake booster from tri county gear

Tri County Gear adjustable brake rod

Has the Hard top, hard doors, and the Bikini Top (one strap broke so it is a bit short)

Current registration

Fender flares are worn, new ones have been ordered and should be here in a few days

No rear seat, front seats replaced with buckets

Needs fuel level sending unit replaced, I have it but have never gotten around to putting it in

I have some pictures on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/cmateski/s ... 087409075/

I'd suggest looking on E-Bay, Craig's List and The Recycler for comparable vehicles, and you'll get a better idea of the current market price for your vehicle. Maybe check out some of the Jeep-specific on-line forums, too.

Not a great seller's market for any vehicle right now, especially older specialty vehicles - so the faster you want to sell it, the more negotiable you should be prepared to be, IMO...

I have been browsing craigslist and ebay, but forgot about the recycler. I know it is not the best time, just hoping to get enough to put a good down payment on a newer jeep or FJ

Its probably only worth $50. I'll give you a $100   That is a classic and clean looking jeep for sure. :D The pre 83 CJ7s are the good ones because there is no smog BS. Its really hard to say what its worth. If its show quality with a no rust body and frame you could probably get $15K + but it might take many months to find the right buyer. If its in "good" condition with only minor rust (no structural rust) and no issues with anything major i'd think you could get $10K but it still might take a while to find that specialized buyer. Those would probably be "nation wide" types of sales with shipping involved. When i looked online for 78 CJs there was one for $5xxx and one for $18xxx and thats it for the nation wide listings in autotrader. You could sell it in less than a week for $5-6K.

Good choice

While it's not a great time to sell, it is a great time to buy...so for most folks looking to change vehicles, it ends up a wash, financially ;)

If I were going to list that Jeep I would advertise it for $7500. You will not find many that are comparable on Craigslist because it is a unique Jeep. I would post it on craigslist because it is free. Post it in LA and San Diego. But I think it would be worth it to pay to sell it on E-bay or Auto Trader. Someone will likely come a long way for a Jeep that well taken care of. It won't sell quickly because of the asking price. If you want a quick sale ask $6000. If in six weeks you are not getting at least one contact a week drop the price to $7000. Feel free to disagree; this is just what I would do.
