Cleveland National Forest:
Hike to Roberts Ranch Meadow & Cottonwood Creek Falls
Saturday, September 18th 2010

If anyone wants to get out and stretch their legs early Saturday morning, I'll be heading out on a couple easy day hikes not too far from town here. I would like to get an early start before the heat of the day sets in. Those wanting to come can meet me at the Carls Jr in Alpine around 6am.

Both hikes are around 2 miles and will take about an hour each, not counting the time spent just checking things out. Bring a hat, drinking water, good shoes, and a snack.

Date: 9-18-2010
Meeting Time: 6am
Meeting Location: Carl's Jr 1263 Tavern Rd
Alpine, CA 91901-3819

No problem. I know how working nights is, and spending time with your kids is important. But if you can make it, you know where to meet up.

Would love to join you guys but the first decent swell in weeks just started filling in and I desperately need to get a fix. My gills are getting dry. If you're going to do another easy one like this, I'll join in and bring my daughters along.

No worries, Ollie. We'll have plenty more opportunities as it gets cooler out.

Sounds good. I'll be sticking with the easier hikes for a bit until I lose some weight. Have fun surfing and keep an eye out for Jaws! Image

Cleveland National Forest:Hike to Roberts Ranch Meadow & Cottonwood Creek Falls
Saturday, September 18th 2010

...Trip Complete...

I met up with ralphie, thatsalexus?, and Willie H and family this morning in Alpine for our hike into a couple areas of the Cleveland National Forest. Our first stop was an oak-studded grassland called Roberts Ranch; privately owned land that was incorporated into the national forest in the late 1990s.

Across the meadow, we came upon the remnants of a century-old ditch designed (but never used) to shunt water from Pine Valley Creek into the San Diego River drainage. We could also see an area of private land that housed what looked like big cats (maybe tigers) behind an extremely large fence in the distance.

Parked across from the trail head.

Bath time!

Back to our vehicles.

Willie H and family headed home afterwards while the rest of us drove on up Sunrise Highway to the trail head for Cottonwood Creek Falls, one of the many secret beauty spots tucked away on San Diego County's public lands.

With our National Forest Adventure Passes displayed on our rigs, we made our way down a narrow, partly overgrown trail that descends beneath power lines. About three-quarters of a mile down, we made a sharp left upstream past some large oaks toward the cascades, which were now in earshot. After a bit of rock scrambling and a few stream crossings, we reached the uppermost fall, where the stream drops ten feet into a deep pool. Much of the stream had slackened and the pools were filled with growths of algae. However, just past the uppermost fall we did find a nice tree-shaded, crystal clear pool that made for a good rest stop and has me wishing I had packed a bathing suite.

Heading down.

Looks like there might be a few places to camp among those oaks.

Now heading upstream.

Lots of bees out today.

These little guys were everywhere!

Watch out for cactus along the route.

This is the deepest pool.

Now this is where I would take a dip.

Time to relax.

Heading back down.

Its all uphill from here to the road.

Still climbing.

We soon reached our vehicles and said our goodbyes. It was a great day to spend out seeing the back country. Thanks to everyone who came along.

Ralphie passing me on the freeway. I would see him again at the expo meet later in the day.
