After our last trip I've decided that the 1.6Ghz Atom is just barely adequate, and am looking to move up to a full carputer for more processing power. The trouble I'm running into is finding a decent, 10-12 inch touch screen for a reasonable price. I was perfectly happy with the readability of the netbook, so I don't need an expensive "daylight readable" model. My requirements are:

- No smaller than 9", no bigger than 12"

- MINIMUM native resolution of 1024x768, I prefer 1280x800 or 1366x768

- $500 or less for a new unit


I found one that is perfect, but it comes with a Gigabyte netbook permanently attached to it so that won't work. You would think with touch screen netbooks so cheap it would be easy to find just-the-screen for the same price or less. After searching for hours I can't find anything that meets those specifications and doesn't cost an obscene amount of money, any ideas?

- 9.7"

- 1024x768

I'd be tempted if it had native support for Windows 7. I just can't bring myself to do the Apad China knock-offs though...

They have both touch screen and standard monitors in the size you are looking for.

Keep an eye out for some android based tablet PC. There is one or two out now but there should be a few more before Christmas I bet. Look on Engadget.com and Gizmodo.com. Most of these are pretty cheap ($200-$400) and touch screens.

I've been using a Xenarc 700tsv for a number of years in the Pinzgauer and lately in the Tacoma. It's a 7" 16:9 touch screen. It works well especially with the new drivers in Windows 7 and Overland Navigator. I'm looking for something to permanently mount in the Tacoma but I haven't found anything yet that I like for a reasonable price.

I'd like to get a Xenarc 702tsv but for almost $500 I think I'll wait and watch what comes on the market in the way of Windows 7 tablets in the next few months. If anyone has tried an iPad with a PC remote control program such as VNC I'd like to know if it works well with Overland Navigator.

Please let me know if you find a reasonable solution.

I'm an Apple guy to the core however most of my work requires me to write Windows based software. On my MacBook and MacPro, I run VMWare Fusion and have zero issues running everything from Win7 to the latest builds of Windows Server and everything in between. VMWare is currently working on an iPad client that looks slated for sometime next year. If you want something now, Parallels has a free version on the App Store. I've not tried Parallels so I can't vouch for it as I've been using VMWare for years. Citrix also appears to be coming out with a client. I've never been a big fan of Citrix over the years but it's a stable product.
