Ouray Colorado July Trip Planning

I know some here are heading out to the Ouray - Silverton - Telluride area in mid and late July.

Two specific events -

'FJ Summit - July 16 - July 20. http://www.fjsummit.org/

Colorado Touareg Rally - July 21 - July 25. http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f75/

Snowfall in the area has been extraordinary this year. I just found two news stories indicating that plow crews are weeks behind - they just opened Yankee Boy over the weekend (if you call snow canyons open - see pix in first story), now heading to Corkscrew, then Engineers, then Imogene. They do not expect to be fully open by the traditional July 4 - more likely open toward the end of July. Another plow may be brought in. So if you are going to either event, - bring a snow shovel :)

So who is going to the FJ Summit and going to the Touareg Rally? Small overlap that weekend - I'll be in Ouray Saturday evening (Alpenglow @ 2nd/5th) and likely scouting/shoveling trails July 20. Any meetups of those here on OAUSA ?

I'm still going to the summit. I'll bring my E-tool and I've got some good snow tires and a winch. Sounds like fun to me. :D

You know I'm there (at the Summit, that is). I hope to meet up with you for at least a beer VOM. Maybe you should get there a day early... :D

I'd love to, but driving a VW into a sea of 267 FJ Cruisers is going to be strange enough on Saturday afternoon :) . There will be a few other Touaregs in early - mostly the trail bosses at the house one block north. Still, I fear its going to look like the Port of Los Angeles (or Long Beach or whereever the come in).

I am looking into the possibility of setting up an Echolink connection all week. Many variables - I need to rig up 'reliable' Internet, so definitely bringing my XR2/Mikrotik/Hi-gain Wi-Fi mono setup (42 dbi); and I might be able to bring the portable 2m base. However the terrain is so very rough on 2m transmissions. I tried APRS last year with complete failure - digipeater-blind.

Looks like you might get another chance to pull me out of the snow. :D

Ollie,
You will have to explain how you got stuck in the snow! Was it so slick that you slid into that snow bank? :D

That was me that got stuck. The snow was to much temptation for me to not drive in and I kind of got stuck as I went into it. lol

Frogeye pulled me back out the way I went in. It was a fun day! :D

I am in for the trip me and the family to Ouray. I am from the midwest so I miss the snow and a few months ago I was warming up flying and landing in the snow of South Korea. Bring it on I have been looking forward to this for a while.

Wife and I will be in Durango for a few days before arriving in Ouray on the 16th. Navy_FJ (Jeremy?), are you back home now?
