Communications for this trip will require some special preparations. For the most part, there will be no cell phone coverage and due to the remoteness of the area, there are no facilities including wired phone service. To the extent that we will need to communicate with family or friends or for emergencies, we will need to bring the necessary radios and devices that will give us this ability.

For those interested, we will be running APRS, HF radios, HF Airmail, and Satellite internet.

Initially, we will be working on an HF APRS set-up for those interested in some long range APRS contacts. If you are looking to get started with APRS, just want to tune up your system, or want to set up an HF APRS station, we will be getting together for a meeting or two to get things rolling.

Who will be bringing HF equipment?

I will post frequencies and times for anyone interested in making HF contacts with us.

Unfortunately, no mobile HF (yet) in my truck. I do plan on bringing a 2m/70cm Elk log periodic antenna just to see what it will do for me on the trail.

I'll be running APRS on 2m and will be able to see others in the group on my navigation display if they're also using the VHF band. The last time we were in that area, I was picked up by a surprising number of digipeaters.

I'll also be sending out scripted "OK" messages on my SPOT each evening. If you'd like someone you know to be on the "OK" contact list, I have 5 'open' contacts so just let me know.

For those interested, I have programmed all of the repeaters that Brian has provided as well as other repeaters and simplex frequencies we may use on the trip. They all have been loaded onto the RT Systems program on my computer and I can transfer them for those running either a Yaesu 8800 or an Icom 7000. If you have a different radio, we will need the RTS software for that radio and we can then transfer all the information. FYI - I am still running RTS v3.xxx. If you have v4.xxx, I am told that it is compatible.

Let me know so I can bring the necessary cables to the Meet and Greet.
