If you are looking for a off-road capable GPS that can be used under marine conditions as well, check out the Lowrance Elite units. They are waterproof, backlit, have a very hi-res screen, and have all sorts of marine charts available for them. They have many more functions than a standard automotive GPS, and can interface with sonar and radar units, too...available in 5", 7", 10", and 12" screens, they aren't inexpensive, but they are nice...

Virtually every off-road race vehicle uses one of these for the navigator...

I have been researching new GPS options myself, and I will either be getting a nexus or samsung galaxy tablet. The amount of quality mapping applications is huge, and you still have the other functions of a tablet

Tablets are definitely a viable option for the quantity and quality of the maps available for them, but they are not designed to hold up in a high-vibration, high-dirt, high moisture environment. Secure mounting is important, as is the need to stay clear of dust, dirt, and water as much as possible.

I have the Lowrance Elite 5m Baja. It works great for me because I use it for pre-running the off road racing courses and marking potential photo op spots. I also have the topo maps for the southwest states and Baja. Down fall: unable to plug in an address and get directions from point A to B. It does have excellent waypoint and tracking capabilities.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions everyone. I have been looking at the lowrance hd ones but they are pricey! Very nice units however!
