Recovery operations are some of the highest risk operation we do off road. All of the tools are dangerous and are potentially lethal. Winches in particular deserve a great deal of respect.

We can discuss a variety of tools and techniques for self-recovery in the time we have .
Bring your questions and issues for a robust discussion.

This isn't a recovery story, but related nonetheless.

2 days ago a man was killed when his equipment failed. Please note, this is why we never use straps with built in hooks.

I would recommend replacing the rope. You have broken strands not just fussy edges. Cut that part off and make it an extension rope.

Per request I am providing a link to the article in the May 2013 issue of Off-Road Adventures Magazine. This is a free magazine distributed by 4 Wheel Parts. You just need to sign up. The article is written by one of my favorite authors Jim Allen. I give everyone who attends my Getting Started Off Road Driving Clinic a copy of his book The 4 Wheelers Bible. I don't always agree with him but he has some tremendous insights to 4 wheeling.

If this link doesn't work do a search on the article title: Hook & Roll: Testing Two Ground Anchors
and go to page 52 in the virtual magazine.
