Hi OAUSA members,
I'm a beginning Overlander living in Los Angeles. I have a 2014 Tacoma Off-Road (still stock) that I'm about to start modifying, and this feels like the perfect place to get advice on key decisions I'll be making on my build, as well as planning adventures. I look forward to running my questions and ideas past you all and getting your feedback.
I work as a designer/animator/filmmaker, primarily creating content for sports promotion. Time permitting (I have an 18 month old son), I'll be using these skills to document my Taco build and future adventures, which I will share with you as well.
Best - David

David, welcome!
I joined this group 3-4 years ago with very basic knowledge. You'll learn a lot here, through the website and the nets. Both are a great source of information. Do you have a call sign yet? All the input you'll get here comes from experience. I look forward to seeing your build and adventures videos!

Hey David
Welcome to OAUSA.
Sounds like you are off to a good start with the selection of your vehicle. The aftermarket will serve you well, and there are plenty of Toyota drivers here to help out. One of the best ways to get started is to come to one of our events. In about three weeks, we will be holding our annual Summer Fest / Field Day event. It is a three day camping trip to our local mountains combined with the largest Ham Radio contest of the year (Field Day). We also expect to have a trail run or two during the weekend. More information here:
viewforum.php?f=203 .
Another way to get up to speed is to tune into our weekly nets which are held every Thursday evening at 7:30PM. We cover a wide range of outdoor topics, including vehicle builds, camping, Ham Radio, shooting, outdoor cooking, photography, wilderness communications, and much more. If you are not a licensed Ham, you can listen through this website.
I will be doing a few off-road trips later this year and you can keep informed by visiting the website frequently.

Hi Dave,
Welcome to OAUSA. I run an 80 series Land Cruiser that is modified for both over landing and 4Wheeling. Not sure if what I know transfers to a Tacoma but have a go. It would be great if you can show up at the Field Day event!

Welcome to OAUSA, Dave !!!
The 3rd Gen Tacoma is a great platform to build an expedition rig on. Having spent most of my daylight hours over the last 30+ years upfitting all types of off-road vehicles, I'd be happy to provide whatever assistance you need, whether it is suspension, protection, electronics, lighting, winches, racks, tires, wheels, etc...
If you can make it to OAUSA SummerFest / Field Day, June 24-26, we can talk in person - or stop by the shop during business hours (

Thanks Larry for talking suspensions with me today when I stopped by DirtyParts. Great to meet you in person. I'll be in touch soon re: starting the build.
