This week the topic is Winching and recovery.
Recovery situations are some of the highest risk operations we perform off-road. All the tools we use are dangerous and potentially lethal. Winches in particular deserve a great deal of respect. We can discuss safety, gear, riggings, techniques, other issues.
Most of us use our winch very infrequently. This is an opportunity to refresh our knowledge.
Put together your questions for a robust discussion.

Tree Strap
It is Important you can estimate the strength of your tree strap rigging.
Most of our riggings look like the second picture (in the second row of pictures) with about 60 degree angle between the two leg of the strap. If your tree strap is rated at 30,000 LB then you have 1.73% of that or 51,900 LB of minimum breaking strength.
I feel the ideal length of a tree strap in the 12 to 15 foot range so you always have a good "V" even if you encounter a large tree. With a 6 foot tree strap that just makes it around the tree will look like the 5th picture and you have don't even have half the original strength of the tree strap. Your 30,000 strap is now good for 12,300.
now look at the last diagram. A bit hard to figure at first but how much strength do you have with 180 degrees and with 29 degrees?
