OUTDOOR MEDICINE

The net this week will focus on outdoor medicine, including issues related to winter time activities. Our Guest will be Dr. Aaron Rubin, MD, KI6OPC. For those who wander into the outdoors, especially in the more remote locations, this net is a "must hear" event. Some of the topics will include:

-hypothermia: causes, symptoms, treatment
-physical exertion in cold weather
-hydration in cold weather
-snow blindness
-muscle cramping, how to avoid and treatment
-must have first aid items for cold weather

For those who have questions, post them here on the net preview. We will submit them to Dr. Aaron at the beginning of the net. Join us!

Dr. Rubin,

My question is more of a request.

When discussing responses on today's Net, could you discuss the difference in a response between a situation where emergency personnel may be an hour or less away Vs. when emergency personnel may be many hours away (delayed response)? Specifically, do priorities change and if so, how?

KK6CTT for the on-line check-in please.

Request: Trauma kit filler suggestions. Individual size verses "aid bag" burden...must have items?

1. Clotting agent impregnated vs. powder? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FbMpMdEqRs
2. Tourniquet self-help vs. two-handed hard to administer to self?
3. IsraelI bandage? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTtfEgAt6KY
4. Anything that is potentially overlooked in a better than average kit commensurate with moderate training and experience.

Thank you.

Dave,
Since the last time we discussed this Net topic, I have assembled a nice first aid kit for the CJ but I would like to add more items. Looking forward to it.
