Outdoor Photography

We are fortunate to have a new professional photographer, Steven Allen KJ6ZBU, who will be our guest this week for this net. With a little luck, we will cover several of the topics that should be of interest to all who enjoy the outdoors and who enjoy taking pictures. So, dust off your cameras, cell phones, or Yaesu FT 400s and join us.

Here are some of the topics that we plan on covering:
  • point and shoot cameras
  • digital SLR cameras at non-professional consumer prices
  • cell phone cameras
  • wide angle lens
  • Raw vs jpeg
  • good video cameras
  • outdoor photography tips and suggestions
If there is a topic that you want to add to the list, let us know!!!

Steven will be posting some example of his work, below. This net is also your opportunity to share some of your camera work and tell us where it was taken, what type of equipment you were using, and any special techniques you used. Since just about everyone carries a phone and since they all have cameras these days, everybody ought to have something to contribute. Don't be shy.

Introduction and my background

When I was 9 years old, my father entered my name in a Ford Motor Co. contest. I won a plastic 126 film camera with a flash bulb flash. My father had to buy the film and flash bulbs for me. By the time I was 18, I had a Honeywell Pentax 35mm camera with lenses and flash and a full black and white darkroom. I took Photography in High School and College. In 2005, I started taking photos more professionally. I have photographed for the City of Temecula, Temecula Valley Players, Shakespeare in the Vines and did a project for the Santa Rosa Plateau. I have photographed several weddings and portrait sessions over the years.

For photo editing, I use GIMP (open source – free) and Google Picasa (free).

Check in please - Thanks - I'll try to listen to the net but I may be listening to, and watching, NASA TV, so I might miss parts of the net.

Watching and listening to NASA TV, as another 4 astronauts went to the ISS, but I had a pocket camera, and later a 35MM Canon camera with a regular and telephoto lens, and I've used 110 and 127 film, plus also used one of those "Instant" cameras that develop the film or photo within minutes. Of course I also have used an Android cell phone camera, plus a couple of camcorders, for both photos and videos.

When I had the 35MM camera, and had sent film in to be developed, I never got my photos, and never got my negatives back either, and they claimed that there was something wrong with the camera, and the supposed film showed a 4-inch long "cut," too straight to be done with anything other than a scissors or knife, that would cause such a straight and long cut, as if the film didn't advance I would've seen it, as there was a Red line that wiggled back and forth when advancing to the next frame, plus there were frame numbers that would show up, plus if the film hadn't advanced, when I opened the back of the camera to remove the film, I would've seen the film, but instead the film was wound back into itself, like it should've done, so I vowed to never send film in to be developed by someone else, and I never have either.

I had thoughts of suing them, if I ever saw my photos in a magazine for example, but never saw them anywhere, so I left it go, but I never sent film in to have developed, especially by Kodak, via the local pharmacy, ever again.

The photos that I had taken were from storm damage back in 1980, in the Eau Claire, WI area, and I think it was in June of 1980, and were caused from what everyone thought at the time, was a tornado, but was later called a "Micro-burst" or something like that, and I think that they kept the photos probably thinking that I was going to use them for looting purposes, or maybe for insurance fraud, but it was to just have in my photo album for something to look at years later, plus I did take some photos for the neighbors that had asked me to take photos for them.

The 35 MM Canon, which I had purchased for $200.00, back in 1977, when I was in the Army and was taking an electronic course at Lowry AFB at the Army detachment there, and was purchased at the BX there, was stolen from me during 1981 when I was living in Florida. The person didn't get the flash though, and some years later, when I was back in the Wausau, WI area, I met a lady who had a Canon camera, but no flash, and she wanted to get a flash unit so she could take indoor photos, so I gave the flash to her.

Anyway, I later won a 35 MM camera, and either film for the rest of my life, or 100 rolls, whichever was reached first, and the catch was that you needed to send the film for them to develop, and then they'd send you the next roll, and I told them to forget it, since they never sent me back the photos that I had taken earlier.

Anyway, I've taken photos of rainbows, Sunsets, and "Good" graffiti, and other things, like airplanes taking off and landing, and have taken videos with a Tablet, a cell phone, and a camcorder, of parades, fireworks, and other things.

When I use the Tablet to take a video of fireworks, it has a fireworks setting, and when I used the cell phone I took the auto focus and set that to manual, and the same goes for the camcorder, as the automatic or auto-focus is too slow for fireworks, or it can't focus on fireworks in the dark, so I use manual focus, sometimes setting it to infinity, sometimes I'll see where it gets clear or focused when it's still light enough to see, which is usually only one or two settings below infinity, and will use that setting, and I've even tried using a manual exposure also instead of using automatic exposure.

I post these things on either Facebook and/or on YouTube, my third account, as I had lost the first account, since it was tied to my TDS e-mail account, which I no longer was able to access, so I started a second account using a GMail address, that way I would always have access to it, no matter what ISP I used, but the second one I had closed because they started to block the viewing of the parade videos in the USA, because they contained copyrighted music, and twice I tried contacting them on it, which they never responded back, and I attempted to tell them that I wasn't trying to make money off of the videos, only wanted to share the videos with people who would never get to see the parades other wise, and that I had no control over what the parade coordinators put over their P.A. system, but YouTube kept blocking the viewing of the parade videos, so I closed that account.

However, I had purchased a battery-operated snow thrower, and wanted to do a review on it, and the review needed to be a YouTube video, so I've opened a third account, and have added a few videos of things there that I had taken with either the cell phone or the camcorder...

However, at least on Facebook, I've also uploaded some drone videos that I had taken this year.

Anyway, I'll try to listen as much as I can, but I may be watching and listening to NASA TV, so my time is going to be divided between NASA TV and the net here LOL ;) :)

Same as above with HDR photo editing. Note the amount of light that was not "seen" by the unedited photo. HDR can make a difference and it can also make a photo look fake and unnatural.

Seeing facial features and other issues around the fire were lacking detail, a Harbor Freight LED light was used to provide a "fill" light. Note the very different spectrum of light produced by the many sources available; warm from the fire flames to very cool; fill light under the log.

You can't do this well without a tripod and the camera set to "countdown." You can also use a remote IR trigger and you will find this kind of shutter release handy when doing scenic selfies where you want to put some distance between you and the camera.

Then there is the "Golden Hour" between sunrise and sunset. It is awesome to use the warm light and the long shadows to produce pictures you cannot take at any other part of the day.

Again, a tripod and a little time spent reading about the camera settings that were discussed earlier in the net can dramatically change the outcome of your photos but you have to work through these setting methodically. Once you begin to understand these setting you are on your way to improving future pictures.

You can really see the saturation of this last photo where many photos were taken and eventually this one appears to be the most dramatic and between the orange sun and the dark shadows.
