2023 Field Day General Information

ANNOUNCEMENT

Our annual Field Day and Summer Fest event, has always been one of our favorite outdoor get-aways. For the last 15 years, OAUSA has distinguished itself by the very unique approach that we take to this, and all of our events. This approach has evolved somewhat over the years, and while we have incorporated many activities into the weekends, we have never lost sight of Ham Radio, as an important part of the event.

For the last few years, we have used the Mt. Pinos campground in the Los Padres National Forest. This year, we have reserved most of this camp, but the number of campers that we can accommodate is limited. We will be posting details and sign-up information soon.

Our uniqueness has taken the form of so many things that no other Field Day can claim, including:
  • a three day event in remote mountain campsites, with great summertime weather and scenery
  • an event where both 2WD and 4WD vehicles can attend, and where there are great 4WD off-road trails to explore
  • Ham Radio license testing, right at camp
  • world class cuisine at our cook-off on Saturday evening, and outstanding group meals for all the others
  • wine tasting
  • hot sauce tasting
  • coffee tasting
  • Bourbon tasting and after dinner libations
  • a smorgasbord of appetizers before each dinner
  • multiple hiking trails
  • three days of relaxation
  • and, of course, a full Field Day competition
There is more, but this should offer a glimpse of why we are so successful. We are all looking forward to this year and this event. Some past events:

SIGN-UP TIME

It's time to start thinking about our annual Field Day and Summer Fest event even though its a few months away. You will need to sign up early if you plan on attending, as there are a limited number of spaces at the campsite.

This year we return to the Mt. Pinos Campground in the Los Padres National Forest, located about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles. This will be a family event involving three days of camping in the mountains (elevation 7800 feet), an official ARRL Field Day competition, several trail runs, great food and drink, and an opportunity to relax in the mountains of the Los Padres National Forest. The camp site is accessible by paved roads and all vehicles are welcome.

Some of our activities:
  • All levels of Amateur Radio license testing on Sunday.
  • Pot luck and cook-off dinner on Saturday evening combined with appetizers and wine tasting.
  • Numerous hiking trails
  • Hundreds of miles of off pavement roads, including some of the more challenging, (Miller Jeep Trail).
  • An active ARRL Field Day station open for business for the full 24 hours of Field Day

IMPORTANT NOTE #1: If you wish to attend during the day to participate in the Field day event (not staying overnight), there is no charge. Everyone who wants to so participate is welcome!!!

IMPORTANT NOTE #2 Given the limited number of sites available, it is very likely that each camp will need to hold more than one camper. The Mt Pinos Campground is very small, and each campsite, while accommodating up to 6 campers, has only enough room for 1 vehicle at each site. There is overflow parking however, which may carry a cost of $10.00 per day. This cost shall be shared equally by the number of vehicles of the campers who occupy the site. In years past, this fee was waived, but one never knows how things may change. Per the Park service: trailers and RVs are not recommended.

Mt. Pinos Campground
Cuddy Valley Rd
Frazier Park, California 93225

Mt. Pinos is part of Los Padres National Forest and is situated in a mixed conifer forest in the Pinos Mountains, at an altitude of 7,800 feet. From Los Angeles, it is only about an hour's drive. Campground temperatures are typically 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the Los Angeles Basin.

The area is in the northeastern part of Los Padres National Forest and offers over 1,200 miles of maintained trails. Much of the forest is primitive and has 10 designated wilderness areas.
