Driving In The Snow
With all the snow that the weather has dumped on us lately, it was a perfect time to revisit one of our favorite topics - driving in the snow. Our guest snow expert driver this week will be Chet, AE6CO.
We will cover many of the things that you should do to safely drive in the snow, as well as things to avoid. So, get out your chains and join us.
Chet will cover snow driving, but here is a short list of things to avoid:

- Let's talk a little about "Pocket Pistols" new to the CA DOJ Handgun Roster and some noteworthy examples as well.

What is the CA DOJ Roster?
- California’s Unsafe Handgun Act (the “UHA”) seeks to prevent accidental discharges by requiring handguns to have particular safety features.
- As of January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice. Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement.
How has the UHA negatively affected the common firearm enthusiast?
- We have firearms that are, in some cases, several generations removed from the most modern designs when compared to other states.
- This continues to limit those wishing to seek out the "best" in the industry while CA continues to fight a recent judge's decision that the CA UHA is "unconstitutional."
- Advances in manufacturing firearms as "ambidextrous" have definitely worked against all of our lefthanded shooters.
What is new to the roster and how do the newly added firearms stack up?
- Some recent additions have really increased the "concealed carry" potential and the below, in no particular order, are a small sample of what is available.

- The Ruger Max-9 is a great entry into the "pocket pistol" genre. Breaking in at just under $400.00, it has a double stack 10-round magazine, fiber optic front sight with tritium insert, manual safety, magazine disconnect and loaded chamber indicator. Some complain about the trigger but a solid contender.

- The S&W Shield Plus is an improvement over the 7 or 8-round magazine capacity of the Shield 1.0. It also has a magazine manual safety, magazine disconnect and loaded chamber indicator. Just below $600.00 it is a little fatter than the Shield 1.0 but a little more compact with a shorter, fatter grip.

- The Springfield Armory Hellcat and Hellcat Pro answer to both the pocket pistol size and the larger format in the Pro model. They feel comfortable in hand and both sport 10-round magazines, a trigger safety and magazine disconnect system. Right at or a little above $600.00 the Hellcats are solid.

- The Sig Sauer P365 is arguably the smallest of the bunch while still carrying a great feel with the extended floor plate. It is the pistol that comes standard with a slide cut for a Modular Optical Sight (MOS), red/green dot optic. The 10-round magazine is small and the manual safety and magazine disconnect work well. This is also the only pistol that does not have a trigger safety. The serial numbered part of this pistol is its Fire Control Unit or FCU. You can change grip and slide/barrel combinations similar to the modularity that made the P320/M18 so desirable for the military. At the $700.00+ range it is the most expensive of the group as well.

These above are the top contenders in the "pocket pistol" group but we couldn't leave out the below "honorable mentions" or "classics."

- How could you not consider the little brother to the 1911, the Glock 26, the Springfield XD Compact or the H&K P2000SK. All noteworthy and proven platforms.
- 240228 Honorable Mention 800.jpg (172.88 KiB) Viewed 6198 times

- And, let's not forget the wheel guns that have been around for over 100 years. No magazines to wear out or intricate safety mechanisms, they just work and keep coming back for more.
- 240228 Smith and Wesson Revolvers 800.jpg (170.92 KiB) Viewed 6198 times

- Not necessarily a "holster" but a sleeve that protects the firearm and is one solution to "pocket carry." There are others, do your research and seek training!

- On the other hand, why bring a pocket pistol to the fight?

Chet's Topic Discussions
1 Snow driving must-haves.

2 Pack your vehicle accordingly.
The basics include:
- air jack and tire chains, if you have them.
- Brightly colored equipment is really useful in a snowy environment.
- An ice scraper/window brush and
- recovery equipment are a must, also.

- Survival2LG.JPG (352.1 KiB) Viewed 6009 times
You’ll want some communications equipment, as well.
- Pack ham radio gear if you have it. If not, consider getting licensed. The exam isn’t that difficult and gear is reasonably priced.
- If you don’t care to go that route, look into a satellite phone.
- Cell phones rarely work in the outback, so don’t count on one.
3. Driving in the snow can be a lot of fun, except when you are not prepared or well equipped. Our discussion this week will include recommendations for driving in the snow , rules and laws as well as equipment suggestions. In addition to all of these things there is something that is more important than anything else - common sense. Mistakes in the snow can be dangerous
While part of the net will involve a discussion of laws in California, a review of laws in other states can be found here:

California Chain Requirement Levels
During the winter months, motorists may encounter traction chain controls in the mountain areas within California. When chain controls are established, signs will be posted along the road indicating the type of requirement. There are three requirements in California.
Requirement One (R1): Chains, traction devices or snow tires are required on the drive axle of all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles.
Requirement Two (R2): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels.
(NOTE: Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.)
Requirement Three (R3): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.
What are Snow Tires
California law
Snow-tread Tires:
The California vehicle code section 558 defines a snow-tread tire as follows, " A 'Snow-tread tire' is a tire which has a relatively deep and aggressive tread pattern compared with conventional passenger tread pattern". Snow-tread tires can be identified by examining the sidewall of the tire where the letters MS, M/S, M+S or the words MUD AND SNOW have been stamped into the sidewall.
