Well, I'm off to Pittsburgh, PA tomorrow morning to help my younger son get set up at college (Carnegie Mellon University !!!). While I know I'm going to miss the day to day personal interaction we shared (gong to jazz clubs, eating at Carney's, playing drums together, watching his band's performances, discussing theoretical physics and its practical applications, etc...) I'm very excited to watch his begin this next phase of his education, and his life.

I'll be back next Wednesday, but I hope to keep in contact on the forum during the trip....

I'm a very proud dad, if it wasn't already obvious...

Have a safe trip Larry, and it sounds like you have good reason to be proud.

I do have to say that I think he's not headed quite far enough east though. If he had just made it over to the eastern side of PA he could have gone to Lehigh University instead! Seriously though, CMU is also a great school for science and engineering.

I've always found it interesting that PA has so many great universities, both public and private. I have three siblings, and all of us ended up attending colleges in PA (Lehigh, Gettysburg, Pitt, and Grove City).

Yeah, it is interesting - there are 10 major colleges and 17 teaching hopitals within about 15 miles of each other here....

THe professor is Randy Pausch - and he would have been one of my son's profs had he survived... very sad... but, for anyone who hasn't seen his talk (or read his book), the speech he gave is on YouTube, and i HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE WATCH IT IN ITS ENTIRETY (The Last Lecture - Randy Pausch, CMU)- it is a life-changing, emotional talk that is well worth the 76 minutes you spend listening and watching this incredibly intelligent, passionate, and articulate human being.

My son is dual-majoring in biotechnology and robotics, with a specialty in medical nanotechnology (wow, did I get that all out in one sentence ???). He has his work cut out for him, but it has been his goal and focus, scholastically, since he was two years old (nice to have a plan...).

Borderline obsessive... can't imagine where he got that!

Larry,

I hope my son has half the ambition of your son. ;)

My only suggestion - assume he will, and start putting away money for school now. I was fortunate enough to marry a Certified Financial Planner, so we've been saving for my sons' (2) college funds since they were born...and I though it was silly then, but I'm not laughing now... :o :D

Thanks... I keep the book nearby at home for inspiration when I feel overwhelmed -
it works to keep things in perspective... 8-)
