I run this radio in the "BugEater". I love this mobile unit. I have been monitoring HF bands with it and can't wait to get my General upgrade so I can start talking around the world while on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere. This radio is ultra-compact and covers the 160-10 Meter Bands as well as 6M, 2M and 70cm.
The antenna I use with this radio is the ATAS-120. The ATAS-120 is made for the FT-857D and the FT-897 (among a few others). The FT-857 has built in controls that dial in the SWR of the antenna by sending current through the coax cable. So there is no need to run an additional power and ground wire to the antenna.

Yes sir... I actually had it installed in Calico. Should have showed it to you. Finally changed it from a temp install to a permanant install last weekend. I'll pt that in my build thread.
