Should I get one or not? My research and peer opinions are leading me this way so far. I have a crappy point and shoot now but as my adventures take me to more memorable places I want to be able to capture them better.

That's a bunch of money to spend on your first DSLR. I was set on getting the Canon 40D with a couple of good lenses, but finances dictated the Nikon D40 instead. I am really glad I didn't spend the extra money. Maybe when I outgrow my Nikon I'll step up to something bigger, but quite honestly, I doubt I'll ever need to. It's a great camera. I'm sure the D90 is great too, if you have that kind of dough.

Also remember that the camera body is just part of the package (and rarely the most important part). Think about lenses and accessories too.

I'm sure you already have, but spend a good amount of time on review type sites, like this one:

He rates the D90 highly, but also loves the D40 (as do I), so consider this as well. That will leave you money for another lens (like the do everything 18-200 VR )

Yea, I am hoping to keep it for a long time. I like the ability to record video, which no other Nikon close to it or above it has. I prefer to get equipment I have to do a lot of work to catch up with and maybe will never master than get something I will discover is junk soon after I buy it.

Oh and I had not seen that Ken Rockwell site. He has some good information for sure. His writing style is enough to make me want to reach through the screen and poke him in the eye though, he has a Mac too it looks like, or at least the monitor so I might just have to launch the iPoke app.

I find Ken Rockwell to be a little biased, and as you say his style can be annoying. And I'm a long time Nikon owner. For very thorough camera reviews I'd check out www.dpreview.com, or you might check out www.fredmiranda.com.

The D90 is a great camera, and if you're just moving into an SLR type camera (film or digital) for the first time it will be a long while before you outgrow it.

Took the plunge and since I was somewhere interesting today I took a few pictures. They are about 12% of the original size and some are cropped. One is color changed but nothing else was done. This is just me learning which button does what, I read the manual between shots to figure things out. It's a small start.

That is an amazing camera. The picture quality looks great (and I already am a big fan of the subject matter ).

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but your last posted picture is quite artistic in an ironic way; the man in the subject, Louie, is a local homeless guy who "lives" in our center - tolerated, but largely ignored - and in the photo, he is leaning against the wall with the partial sign reading "appreciated "... leaving this photo to some interesting philosophical interpretation....

Luckky! I got the D80 and I LOVE it but I am so jealous of the video feature you got. I have a micro size sony digicam that works beautifully but the photos it takes are crap.

Yea, I watch him wander around when I come there and noticed this because he stands there a lot. Here is the original (smaller though) before I cropped it.
