Well, when it comes to backcountry navigation, I'm a traditionalist. Map and compass!

Now, I like my GPS, but the only direction you are guaranteed of finding is down.

Do you know how to find north and south at night? Star power.

East-West during the day? Stick a stick in the dirt.

There's even a way to tell south using an analog watch. Analog watch? What's that?

During daylight savings time, bisect the angle between the hour hand and 1:00.

Or think of it this way...The sun rises at 6:00PM and sets at 6:00 PM. You watch's hour hand is turning twice as fast as the earth is rotating.

This one is easier to remember, and I teach it to all the Scouts in my troop.
You won't be finding a geocache with these techniques, but you can orient your map well enough to get you to a "handrail" In navigation parlance, a handrail is a long feature, such as a freeway or river.
