keeping a loaded gun in the house?

Post by big dave » Fri Oct 17, 2008 1:53 am

Guys, Gals,

Ive been giving this a lot of thought, and it peaked yesterday when that little boy in Vegas was kidnapped during a home invasion robbery. I want to keep a loaded gun in my house that i can easily access if i need to. We live at the end of a culdesac, and Wal Mart is right behind us. We were here before that god foresaken store. In the past, weve had problems with people walking in our backyard and on the wall for shortcuts through the neighborhood.

I have 2 boys in my house, a 5 year old and a 2 year old. My 3rd is coming on Nov 25th through csection. We all know how curious children are. How do i keep a loaded gun in the house and prevent my kids from getting a hold of it and firing it? I think keeping it in a safe would hamper my ability to respond to a situation in timely matter. Id want to jump out of bed and grab my gun in 2 seconds, and have it stuffed in someones face by 3.

Any thoughts?

Biometric safe, they open instantly but only to your fingerprint. not too expensive either. I'll link a couple finds.

Might be a nice loophole to concealed carry also for the vehicle??

Be very careful about the carrying of a weapon in a vehicle. Unless you possess a CCW, YOU MUST carry it in the vehicle UNLOADED and in a proper container. Also, even if you are otherwise in compliance with the law, it cannot be kept there all the time. It will only be legal, when unloaded and in the proper container, if you are going to and coming from legally approved places where you can use or keep the firearm, viz., shooting range, hunting etc.

On the issue of kids, in addition to keeping it out of reach and secured, there is no substitute for constant training about the rules of what they should do in the event that they find a gun. Kids will naturally be curious and you need to teach them what to do to overcome that natural tendency. I know that your kids are on the young side, but better to start early than later, especially if you keep guns in the home..

So basically if you live in Cal and aren't a cop you are SOL? I thought there was no CCW here.

Great answers here. Ive decided we are going to keep an unloaded 20g shotgun with 18.5 barrel in the closet, and some 20g birdshot shells in a biometric safe. Its not the best for response, but you can load a shell fairly quick in a pump and the birdshot wont go through walls. The 20g will still pack a punch, but keep my family safe from penetrating walls.

Junkie, don't ask don't tell regarding the car. CCW in CA needs to happen NOW! Unfortunately, if you aren't somebody with major clout, you can't have it. CA wants it's citizens to be dependent on the understaffed police system (A FAILING ONE) in a time of crisis. Just dial 911 when the local thugs decide to break into your house, you'll be just fine. I believe that we all should have the right to a CCW and that we all should have to go to annual trainings to be able to maintain the CCW. ;)

I keep my weapon ready in the house, I don't have any children to worry about. If I'm in a life threatening situation, I will engage the threat.

To quote Public Enemy, 911 is a joke. Last time I needed to use it it took me about 10 minutes and at least 4 push button responses until I got through to someone, Crap like, For English press 1. Ridiculous. Someone who isn't me carries one on most secluded or far from civilization runs he goes on as well as anything near the border. Sorry to kinda get off topic.

Well........not really. There are exceptions, but unless you know the limits and content of the laws, it is quite easy to find your self speaking chants you might not like...........Yes your honor, no your honor, I understand your honor, it will never happen again your honor....................

I remember what it was like to have small children. I started mine early with shooting and education. The NRA had a eddie eagle or something for educating kids. I used some of their materials. My kids were exposed to firearms daily, so it was never a subject to be curious about. They had their own guns and the rules were discussed on a regular basis. They were also instructed to leave anyones house if a gun was produced.

Kids will be kids and they have friends who are not instucted about gun safety, so precautions must be taken. I have gun safes, but my home defense long guns were unchambered, rounds in the mag, safety on and out of sight, but ready for rapid deployment. One can use different safes, that are capable of rapid deployment as well as standard lockable wall mounts. My carry gun was always with me, and when I came home and took it off, I would place it up high and when I wet to bed it was on the night stand, so the kids never had a chance to get it. They never really cared, as it was just SOP in the household.

As important, whatever weapon you decide on, as well as how it is to be used, practice with it and how it will be deployed so it is second nature. This does not mean shooting a few rounds at the range. Practice under time and pressure to move to the weapon and ammo, load and be prepared mentally and physically to use deadly force. In the middle of the night, with the effects of being awaken by the alarm ringing, wife screaming, dog barking, children running is not the time to find yourself fumbling for the gun and or ammo--trying to figure out what is happening, where the wife and kids are and then trying to load the gun and ID a threat. You had better be able to load that gun in the dark under pressure. Sound difficult, It is. Practice and train like you intend to fight. I have been through it a few times and practical practice, training and mindset will get you out alive. Your wife and childrens lives depend on it. Am I being harsh--yes, because too many people talk the talk and then become statistics due to their failure. I know of a few.

Coming from someone who has been through the above, among a few other nasty situations, please get some training and practice.

CCW's are issued in CA. They are city and/or county issued. You don't always need to have clout.

Clout or your life has been threatened already. But I've been told that it's almost impossible for Joe public to go and get the CCW. What's the real story?
