That's called hot linking and is generally a bad idea. Whomever owns the site the image is linked from can change it to whatever they wish at any time and cause you problems, the least of which is a harmless image. I recommend re-hosting your favorite emoticons or whatever before you link to them anywhere.

He just needs to edit his post to remove the image link.
