Triple Chocolate Cake

Here is the "famous" Triple Chocolate Cake that I made for BorregoFest. I got this recipe at the IDOS Dutch Oven Convention in Oct. from the Arizona Champion Dutch Oven Cook. I have made this four times now and it is the easiest. It's a big hit to have warm chocolate cake in camp. No frosting is needed.

Triple Chocolate Cake

Start with a 12" Dutch Oven, cold.

Ingredients:

1 Box Devils Food Chocolate Cake Mix
1 Box Instant Chocolate Pudding, any size (I use the small)
1 Pkg Chocolate Chips
3 eggs
1-3/4 cup Milk

Mix all ingredients in a bowl with a wooden spoon. Add chocolate chips last to make stirring easier.
Grease oven sides and bottom with cold butter.

Pour batter into oven. Place oven over a ring of 9 coals around outside edge. Place 15 coals around perimeter of lid.
Bake for 53 minutes. Rotate oven and lid in opposite directions every 15 minutes.
Remove coals and invert oven to free finished cake onto lid, tapping with a plastic handle if necessary. Invert cake onto plate and cool.

Important tip: get in line early as this stuff disappears in a hurry.

Tim's recipe gets an OAUSA 5 star seal of approval!

How did I miss out on a Triple Chocolate Cake at BorregoFest ???

Was I drugged ? Distracted by the lure of an upgrade ? Stuck in my FJ trying to figure out what all the buttons and switches are for ???

I sure hope I get another opportunity to give it a taste test...

For those of you who don't like, or can't eat, chocolate, I tried modifying the original recipe to make Triple Vanilla Cake. The name is not as sexy, but it got rave reviews at a July 4th pool party from a group familiar with the triple chocolate. Simply substitute yellow cake mix, vanilla pudding, and white chocolate chips for the chocolate versions in the original recipe. I think the white chocolate melts and blends with the batter, but it still tastes and smells great.

Hmmmm... Perhaps.

I know of at least 2 people in that other group who can't eat chocolate, and have passed on the Triple Chocolate Cake. I made the Triple Vanilla to accomodate them. :D
