Hi All,
Just got back. I rented a 4 door rubi and tested it . I will post pics when I get them uploaded. I must say I was impressed with its ability. In 4 low it would idle up and over most obstacles and when locked front and rear it was a goat.
So the positives for me were:
1. off road abilities very good for a stock rig;
2. good visibility;
3. lots of room and good seats;
4. good on road manners;

Negatives:
1. Underpowered;
2. lack of space inside for little things--like glasses, phone etc. Needs more cubby space;
3. inside light was terrible-needs some better inside lights for night;
4. jeep quality, or I should say lack of-shifter knob came off and flew into the back seat, tray in center console broke, doors hard to close, the tailgate needs something to keep it open. It would close on you with the slightest breeze, headlights dull;
5. gauges;
6. A bit too low.

I have no desire to switch, remember, I owned a jeep before. I do think the rubi package is one of the best offering from the manu that is out there. However, there quality control pushes me to Toyota. Now if toyota would offer a real offroad package that was competitive--SFA, lockers front and rear, 4-1 transfer case--oh well we can dream

They do have them, unfortunately, I have not been able to figure out how to import them from Africa. Turbo diesels, lockers, SFA etc.

Well, that's cool you got to try one out. But underpowered? You should try driving my Jeep! In any case, the Wranglers are an enthusiast vehicle. They have their quirks. As with most any newer model vehicle I'd say that they just don't make 'em like they used to. One of the things I like the most about these rigs is the visibility, like you mentioned, and their maneuverability.

Jeep Wranglers have always had an issue with storage space. So besides the usual mods of lift, tires, bumpers and armor, one of the most important things to do is add extra cargo capacity. Such as with center consoles, overhead and rear bumper racks. Of course, this all depends on the driver's wheelin' style and what the rig is intended for. Also, with the 4-door Wranglers you need to add more lift to compensate for the longer wheel-base. But what's nice about the newer JK's is that less lift is needed in order to clear bigger tires. What's also nice is that they have the largest aftermarket support of any vehicle.

One of these days I'll have to get behind the wheel of an FJ and see what its like.

Jeep did well with the 4-door models in tucking everything up into the frame and putting armor underneath it. The 2-door versions have some components hanging below the frame that need added protection. When putting the lift on my friends 4-door JK I noticed that Jeep did put some thought into the longer frame by making nearly everything fit up into the frame and installing a decent skid plate to protect it all. The driveshaft is what I would say is the weakest link on the vehicle.
