APRS Operating
Re: APRS Operating
OK any other takers?
Dave what equipment did you end up ordering. Judging from the time frame I would guess tinytrack or opentrack hardware.

We may want to bring Scott, Tom, Ralphie and Bruce in on this. I know that Bruce and Tom are either in the process of setting this up or are about to do so. At your discretion, we can carry this discussion over to the Parashant forum so as to not interfere with your post here.

Re: APRS Operating
I would definitely be interested to learn what equipment is required to create a functioning APRS system, using components I already have in the vehicle, if possible.
I have a Yaesu FTM-10R 2m/440, Yaesu FT 857D, Garmin 2730, Lowrance Globalmap Baja 540C (antenna already tapped into my Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 laptop), but no built-in / external TNC or software yet.
This might not be the appropriate time for me, as I know you are all getting ready for Parashant, and I won't be joining in on that trip. So, if you are going to have a general informational meeting, I'd like to be there. If this is trip-specific, I'll wait for a later opportunity...

Info on MixW:DaveK wrote:Tigertronics Signal Link USB, (Integrated USB Soundcard.) I am still working on the mapping program to use. Not sure yet.

18. How can I use mixw and ui-view with my SOUNDCARD ?
* MixW 2.xx does emulate KISS TNC into attached COM-port. Go to menu Configure, TNC emulation, and select the port used as a KISS TNC. Let it be COM2 in our example. Now we have the following configuration: TRCVR - SoundCard - MixW - COM2
* COM2 must be wired to another computer or another comport on this computer, and be used with any program which works with KISS modem. For example: TRCVR - SoundCard - MixW - COM2 - COM3 - UI-View.
* >This solution requires two physical comports. Since these comports do nothing except transferring data between programs, we can use virtual comports.
* Somewhere on the Internet one can find a driver of pseudo com-port, for example - com-port usage via Internet connection.
* Our hardware setup be as follows: TRCVR - SoundCard - MixW - Emulated COM5 - Internet - Emulated COM6 - UI-View.
* Com5 and Com6 are not physical ports and cab be placed on the same PC or on two PCs connected through TCP/IP.
In MixW has implemented a driver which represents an emulated tied couple of COM ports. It appears as "MixW serial port bridge" in Windows device manager window after installation. See addendum for details. Note: the driver for W95/W98 is not written yet.
* My own, UT2UZ, setup: TRCVR - SoundCard - MixW - COM9 - MixW serial port bridge - COM8 - UI-View.

Re: APRS Operating
I believe that MixW should be all you need to emulate a TNC in your laptop

Frank:
I was leaning toward AGW over MixW. I understand that they both accomplish the same thing. Your thoughts?

Not an exclusive group by any means. All are welcome. My thought was that we define our group and then give everyone a chance to get whatever they need with some help from our tech savvy guys. At that point, we could plan for a get together. Game?

I was confused by the documentation in AGW. Perhaps either will work.DaveK wrote:I was leaning toward AGW over MixW. I understand that they both accomplish the same thing. Your thoughts?
