Panamint & Saline Valleys 3/12-15/09

Post by traveltoad » Mon Mar 16, 2009 5:51 am

Just (another) quick trip to the Death Valley area, I've been there three times so far this year. Unfortunately, I was not good about taking photos this trip, too many miles to cover in too little time: three days, 800 round trip miles, 375 miles of dirt, one blowout, two flats.

Ready to go:

A few scenic detours along the way:

The wildflowers were out in force. They assulted both the visual and the olfactory senses.

Double secret "shortcut" down to Ballarat:

Another "shortcut" from Panamint Valley Road around the backside of Ash Hill. It is kind of fun to pop out back onto pavement just south of Panamint Springs.

The way knobbies should look after a good dual-sport ride!

Great pics, looks like the weather was perfect. Was this the trip you were worried about running out of fuel? How did you work it out?

Yep, this was the one.

It worked out fine as one of the lads camped at the springs with an extra 10gal of fuel to top us all off. Which was a very good thing... by the time I was finished going back and forth the make sure everyone was ok I ended the day with 275 dirt miles. Of course, when traveling at 90mph that doesn't take all that long! :o

Well that was convenient. Would you have cut the trip short or ridden slower had the gas not been available?

Slower... probably not. Shorter... maybe. I could have easily cut out some mileage by not playing around as much as I did.
