Awesome!!! Thanks RedDavid... I have it plotting waypoints on my GPS now. For some reason I get a "Data Base Error" alarm when certain waypoints enter the GPS but I imagine it's because I have a setting wrong somewhere.

Excellent. Sorry haven't had that error yet. I did set my waypoints to 9 digit i think. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

In any case mine has been doing it for years, Reloading the maps into the GPS helped, but it took forever and the problem comes back so I just don't worry about it.

Thanks Hector... I am certain that the database error is coming from the APRS. It coincides with when I get a received packet on the radio. I I'm getting it when I receive a signal from a prior station that the GPS has already plotted a waypoint for. The names are the same and it doesn't have a protocol for dealing with the new waypoint. You would think it would just give it a designated rolling number (i.e. K6JYB-91, k6JYB-92, k6JYB-93, etc.) but I'm not sure. I might have a setting wrong too. I have the data cable coming Tuesday for the radio to PC (serial) so I can plug in my laptop.

THe other issue I get is I can't seem to communicate with or track Dave (K6DTK). Only certain stations are plotting on the GPS. Dave sees me on his computer in his truck but only I got a waypoint a few miles from him but nothing else in his area. I send him messages and he gets them but I don't get his messages. I tried turning filters of and on, setting different hop settings (ie. N-Paradigm WIde 1-1 / Wide 2-1, Region Wide 1-1, Wide 2-2, Wide 2-2, etc.), changing to different baud rates, etc.

I love the new ability with APRS but, as others have said, there are little step-by-step how-to instructions out there that I can find.

Take a look at this page. The person seems to be having the same problem. I cant make sense of the answer though as I do not have this setup (READ: jealous)

It is possible that you may have your distance filter set, If he is outside your distance limit, He will not display on your radio or GPS.

As far as the waypoint display settings, the only setting would be for how many characters your gps will support for waypoint names. I will download the 710 manual and look for anything new, but it is strange.

If you are looking for the full manual, it only comes with the unit on a cd.

Ollie,

Look at menu 602 and look for any active filters that may affect receiving Daves Packets. You may also look toward putting a Los Angeles Wide Dig such as N6EX-10 at the end to ensure your packets are getting back to LA. Wide1-1,n6eh-1

Menu 603 and ensure your Name settings are consistent with the naming characteristics of your GPS Device.
Again it is completely dependent on the capability of your device. If your GPS can support a 6 character name set it to 6-char, if it supports 8 then Char-8.

Would it be correct to say that if I want to track APRS with laptop through my Kenwoood TM-D710A that I only need to download the AGWTracker software since I have a built in TNC in the radio?

Ollie,

With the D710A i would think you would be better off with the UI-VIew32. AGW tracker only works with the AGWPacket engine. While I think you can connect your Hardware TNC (D710) through the packet engine I do not know why you would want to.

My recommendation would be UI-View32. There are some configuration settings that you need to do, they are listed in the D710A manual.
